KATHMANDU, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The young king of Bhutan who has been in Bhutan's throne after his father's abdication have tied knot with his long time love at a Royal Ceremony in Bhutani capital Thimpu on Thursday.

The 31-year-old King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck married a commoner and his long time love Jestun Pema, ten years younger to him.

The marriage ceremony as per the Buddhist rituals took place at a 17th century monastery at Punakha, the country's old capital.

The fifth King is immensely popular in the Asian country with a population of some 700,000 people.

The Oxford graduate King Wangchuck came down from his throne to place a crown upon the head of 21-year Jetsun Pema.

Monks chanted blessings for the royal couple while long trumpets blown and offerings were made for their happy married life.

According to the state television's live broadcasting, after the ceremony, the king and his bride held hands and walked into the monastery.

As the King's choice, the ceremony was kept very simple with no invitation to the heads of states, foreign princes or celebrities at the wedding.

The national television had broadcasted the wedding ceremony live.

The live broadcasted showcased the traditional dances being performed by many dancers including children in the honor of the newlywed couple.

The people in Bhutan seemed very happy and delighted to get their new Queen who is revered a lot.

The young king began the country's democratic transition in 2006, the year of his father's abdication.

In March 2008, Bhutan became a constitutional monarchy and the king relinquished his absolute powers.

According to the reports and the state media, the newly married couple met at a family picnic in Thimpu when the King was 17 and the Queen was seven.

Vows were made by the King then by saying that if he remained single when he grows up and if she is still single, then he will like to marry her.

The King fulfilled his vows later after fourteen years of their meeting.

A daughter of an airline pilot, the bride and her family which is the country's elite had known the royals for a long time.

The bride has pursued part of her studies in London and is interested in arts, playing basketball and is studying for a degree in International relations.

He was 17 and she was 7, according to the article. A little weird. He said then that he would like to marry her if he and she were both single by the time she grew up. Good thing for him there were probably no competitors brave enough to try.

Kind of creepy that a 17 year old proposed to a 7 year old... but I have to say she did fill out well.
