"The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.' "

1/11/45 "Drive-In" Program #125 Nancy Kelly (Mildred), Wally Maher ; Announcer - Joseph Kearns, The Man in Black ; Producer/Director - William Spier ; Writers - Muriel Ray Bolton & Mel Dinelli ; Music Composition - Lucien Morawek ; Music Conductor - Lud Gluskin ; Pitchmen - Elsa Maxwell & Truman Bradley ; Sponsor - Roma Wines; Mildred is a drive in restaurant car hop in Hollywood, California, hoping for a break in motion pictures. Ruth talks her into taking one last customer on a rainy night. Her last customer, just as she is about to leave work at midnight, has blood on his car. He identifies himself as "Doctor Morgan" and he has just treated an emergency from a crash at Sunset and Vine. Mildred misses her bus to her Glendale home. She accepts a ride from "Doctor Morgan" and finds out that he is not at all what he claims to be. She picks up a dropped shaker before entering his car. However, "Doctor Morgan" passes the bus-stop and then heads up to Laurel Canyon. He thought that Mildred had called the police because she saw the blood. He breaks the car door handle. The car-hop is threatened by the homicidal maniac. Mildred realizes that she has made a bad mistake which may soon cost her life when he pulls a gun on her. A motorcycle police siren is heard. He tells her to tell the police that he is a physician, she is a nurse, and they are on an emergency. He shows the cop his credentials. After the policeman lets them go the man admits that he is not Doctor Morgan. They drive on and encounter a landslide. The car becomes stuck. The man gets out to attempt to dislodge the car. Mildred tries to escape, but the man stops her and takes her raincoat to put under the wheel. As he bends over his gun is visible. Mildred grabs it and says that she'll kill him if he comes after her. However, the gun is empty and he forces her back in the car. They drive off and arrive at Lookout Mountain. He points out Los Angeles, Western Avenue and Westwood. He says he killed his wife a long time ago because she couldn't keep her promises. The jury said he was insane, and he was put in an asylum. He admits that he killed Doctor Morgan tonight so he could get away with the doctor's car because he didn't want to be locked up any more. Mildred reaches in her pocket and feels for something with which she could protect herself. She feels the shaker and a pencil. A car approaches. The man kisses her to keep her from crying out. The couple in the car drive off. She removes the cap on the shaker and gets a handful of pepper which she throws in his eyes. He stumbles and falls over the edge of the cliff. Mildred collapses and passes out. When she awakes it is still raining. (CBS)(29:30)

It’s fine here, too, and back home in Texas, Mom said they got 4 inches of rain in the past couple of days. She said it was a miraculous slow-moving system that dumped rain on much of the state. Thank the Lord!!!

Evening, Vision.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

Yes, glad to hear TX got rain.
I'm kinda reluctant to say this, but last week's Inner Sanctum mildly spooked me...enough that a bump in the night thereafter had me on edge...lol...the blind man and his brother...jeepers!

Oh, it's been downright pleasant the last several days - sunny, and temps in the 70's. We're getting some weather, though - we've got a system crossing Florida what may (or may not) turn into something significant, but it's got gale watches up along the coast and it's downright gusty here. Cool, breezy, and rainy. Made plans for it, too - we've had a crock pot of chili going all day, with bell peppers in it that we picked out back on Friday. The wife is in the kitchen fixing a pan of sweet cornbread. All in all, a good evening to be inside and literally eat the fruit of our labors.

Yes, Vision, that Inner Sanctum was creepy beyond measure!
This Gunsmoke was soooo intense! I got tears in my eyes (and I think Keith did, too :-).
Keith said that would make a great trivia question: What is Doc’s real name? Calvin Moore. Wow, what a story that was! The good lawman from Virginia came through to save the day.

Viking, you have a great dinner going!
I hope you’re feeling well. We see that system over Florida. We’ll see if it develops, as it’s moving in our general direction here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast...

Thank you........had a little fluid buildup and neuropathy in the lower extremities, but I was a bad boy and wasn't taking my Lasix as I should. I hate making road trips for work and that stuff kicks in - makes you hear The Call Of The Wild with zero notice. I just gotta get back in the gym more, and quit making excuses. The chili got two paws up from our Dachshunds, and even Mrs. Viking put down a whole bowl, ulcer be damned. (There's something about cooking with the veggies you grew yourself that makes everything taste better.) You may not see much, if any, of the rain from this system pushing this way - it's supposed to get caught up in a front coming in from the west and get pulled up toward Vision's way, but the front will certainly water your lawn for you.

You’d better behave! I’m glad to hear it’s not too bad on your body. As we know, it could always be worse, and if you and Mrs. Viking and doggies are eating chili, that’s a good sign!
Rain is always welcome here. :-)
