Word For The Day, Thursday, Roctober 6, 2011 - hamartia
dictionaries ad nauseam | 6 October 2011 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

hamartia \hah-mahr-TEE-uh\ noun
tragic flaw

Example sentences:
Greed was the hamartia that ultimately brought down the protagonist.

"Kara Swisher, the co-executive editor of All Things D, also pointed out that being on TBS might be Conan's hamartia."
-- Michelle Castillo, CBSNEWS.com, August 23, 2011

Etymology:
"Harmartia" arose from the Greek verb "hamartanein," meaning "to miss the mark" or "to err." Aristotle introduced the term in the Poetics to describe the error of judgment which ultimately brings about the tragic hero's downfall. As you can imagine, the word is most often found in literary criticism. However, news writers occasionally employ the word when discussing the unexplainable misfortune or missteps of übercelebrities regarded as immortal gods and goddesses before being felled by their own shortcomings.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Well the iPad likes to add in random Ds between words instead of spaces, so I feel your pain.

You complain about the Double Ds but most men find them enchanting.

JFK was quite the partier
Clinton, too, but he was naughtier
But Obama don’t play
He’s above all the fray
Being haughty is his hamartia

Are either of you following this story of the missing baby in Kansas City? 10 month old baby girl - someone comes in a screenless window, has to go all the way across the house to abduct the baby and takes three cell phones. The daddy comes home from his shift at 4am and notices the front door open, lights on, baby gone.

I'm not saying the mom is to blame, but the parents are the first suspects in any home abduction. The odd thing is the dad listed NINE people who might be responsible! NINE? He knows NINE people he distrusts enough to steal his kid?

I'm not sure this is going to end well

I realize this is my own personal opinion, but if one of my children was missing I would be comatose, not on tv asking someone to return him or her. I'm always a little freaked out by those who are able to appear on tv. It's not like their appearance would turn the heart of a kidnapper - the police are asking the same thing, to return the child. But tv appearances seem odd to me.

The couple isn't married, she has a couple of boys from a previous relationship - they live in a middle class neighborhood.
