NEWPORT, Pa. -- Officials say a bear attacked a couple inside their central Pennsylvania home, sending both people to a hospital.
Pennsylvania Game Commission spokesman Jerry Feaser says the attack happened Monday morning in Oliver Township. He says the couple's dog was outside and ran into the home, followed by the bear.
Feaser says the man inside the home was scratched and bitten and a woman was attacked as she tried to chase the animal away.
Emergency dispatchers say both were taken to Harrisburg Hospital with unspecified injuries.

I saw that posted a coupla years ago, it was a Whippet dog (similar to a Greyhound) that had a gene malfunction allowing its muscles to grow uncontrolled from puppyhood! Sweet dog, but visually SCARY.

Yes. I am glad he did not get my cat! This bear seems to have some familiarity around people. It moves slowly when backing off. Wildlife said to make yourself look big, talk very firmly to it and do not make eye contact as you back off as they will view it as a threat. Bears do not like loud noise and if you take a big pot and bang the inside with metal it will probably run. Do not block its exit or surprise a bear. Do not interfere with its getting food. Do not get too close. When they are on their hind legs, it means they are sniffing the air. When they stomp a foot and snort they are ticked. You are also not supposed to run or they may view you as prey. I was jogging one night and saw the bear at the edge of the neighbors driveway. I was running right for it!!! I turned on a dime and sprinted like a deer home. I kept telling myself “Don’t run!” “Don’t run!” Surprisingly, he never paid me much mind. This bear knocked my garbage can over one night and pawed it over. I went out and put the garbage in new bags while he was off in the bushes watching me. He came back after I went to bed and ripped those up too! He does prefer not to confront humans but if he does see me, he is generally either nonchalant or slow and methodical even when backing off. One night when I opened the back door suddenly he got spooked and took off across the ditch. He sounded like a horse galloping. Last Christmas, he was running in my neighbors yard like he was spooked and I barely made it inside!
Dear Upper Midwest FReepers, I'm in need of some legal/moral support after being charged with a CCW violation. I also want my handgun back. Can any Wisconsin members chime in to lend your support? I'm going to call the DA’s Office tomorrow to find out where he going with the charges. Come November 1st 2011 this is no longer a violation of the law.FReegards,
A ping to post 23 in the event anyone can be of help. Frmail rather than the thread would be best.
Michigander wishing you much luck and I’ll say an extra prayer for you.

Good luck, STD. Stay strong. Find out all about the DA you’ll be talking to in advance. If he’s a rabid anti-gunner, I would assume you’ll need a good lawyer.
Talking personally to the prosecutor may save you some legal fees but at far greater expense to your life because any concession he gets out of you on the facts can be used against you if there is a trial. A lawyer is likely to know the prosecutor well enough to know the limits and how to commit the prosecutor to behave reasonably since you have "already been punished by attorney's fees" (thereby proving you are a friend and supporter of the legal defense brotherhood which is probably what the prosecutor will be joining soon enough and he/she knows it). If your lawyer was recently a prosecutor in the same office, so much the better. You may also want a reference from the National Rifle Association or from Gun Owners of America or from the Second Amendment Foundation.
For now and until November 1 has come and gone, your only personal contact with a prosecutor should be to tell him/her you are trying to obtain an attorney. Other than that, respectfully assert your intention to listen to your lawyer and to have no substantive conversations until you have one. If the prosecutor does not cooperate with that, go to court on your own and tell the judge you need time to obtain an attorney. Do not accept a public defender since they tend to be liberal and non-sympathetic to gun rights.
If you call the prosecutor on the phone, he/she will feel compelled to get you to convict yourself out of your own mouth. Do not kid yourself that you are clever enough to outwit the prosecutor. Some are dim but don't bet your future on it. Don't try to save money on a felony charge which would likely lead to a felony conviction which would also permanently remove your right to keep and bear arms under the Federal Firearms Control Act of 1934.
You probably have a lot better things that you would like to spend your money on but you apparently got caught in a CCW violation. No one stashed the W on you without your knowledge or against your will. When you were arrested and charged, CCW was a crime. That it soon will not be a crime does not protect you in any formal sense. You would not perform your own brain surgery (I hope). Don't handle a serious criminal charge on your own behalf. If necessary, let your attorney bargain away your handgun if the prosecutor will drop the prosecution. If you are convicted, you won't be allowed to have it. Despite the foregoing, a resourceful attorney who knows the prosecutors and judges may well be able to obtain a favorable result. If the prosecutor or judge is playing hardball, the attorney can prolong the agony until green mold consumes the state's file and the case gets dismissed out of frustration and due o its old age in some cases. Rely on a qualified attorney and not on me or the prosecutor.
Good luck and may God bless you and yours.
Saw husband (bandaged up ) and wife on TV. Did not see the ‘lucky dog’.
Just remember, the ‘who’ that does not have ‘night vision’. . .
For a nuisance bear like you describe, consider bear pepper spray as a deterrent. In black bear country, I carry the Counter Assault product: http://counterassault.com/.
If you buy it and have to use it, try not to spray it in kitty’s direction as it’s quite strong.
It’s a whippet they injected with a myostatin inhibitor.
“Myostatin” is a subtance that tells muscles to stop growing. Without it, we would have historically starved to death.
It’s a duchaines musclular dystrophy drug.
It has already found its way into the black market, as it has all the benefits of anabolic steroids without the suppressive factors.
(Knowledge like this is the advantage of lifting heavy with an endocrinolgist who also happens to be an amtuer bodybuilder. In my misspent youth, I would have totally abused that drug.)
Thanks for the tip. I will definitely get some and keep it with me!
You’re welcome! Also consider getting one of their holsters and the inert training canister to practice with.
