When Friday's football game between Hunter-Kinard-Tyler (S.C.) High and Calhoun County (S.C.) High (members of which are pictured below) was delayed for two days, few people (if any) would have predicted what caused the postponement.
Weather? Not this time. A power outage? Nope, the electricity was flowing just fine.
Instead, the matchup between two small South Carolina schools was delayed because of a massive infestation of fire ants on Hunter-Kinard-Tyler's home field . After inspecting the field before the game's opening kickoff, football referee Steve Hook discovered nearly 20 active fire ant mounds on the surface of play.

A cup full of fire ants! ouch!
All the fire ants in Texas have gone deep underground because of the drought. I have not seen a new mound in months.
The home field coach needs to be fired.
Lousy management of school property.
Good thing they canceled the game because fire ants can cause big trouble for their size. I’d damn sure hate getting stung by the SOB’s.
The GF’s dog got into a FA mound a few weeks ago and got hit so many times on his snout that its nose swelled up the size of a ping-pong ball.
Warm soapy water and they’re dead.
“All fire ants in Texas have gone deep underground because of the drought..”
I wonder if they didn’t water the playing field to keep the grass alive? If so, wouldn’t that make the ground more “fertile” for these type critters?
I have found charcoal ash to be effective when placed on their mounds.
In college, we had a night softball game in Florida delayed when a scorpion ran onto the pitcher's mound. Of course, as northerners, we freaked. The Ump walked to the mound and stomped it to death. Game on!
The showers we had last week brought a couple of colonies back to the surface. Out comes the white Orthene powder. DRT.
That would do it. Nasty creatures. It's a losing battle.
