I met Stallman when he was touring FreeGeek here in Portland this summer. What a jerk. Treated the volunteers like scum.

Love his software though.

Great post, thanks for the anniversary reminder of all the good stuff Stallman contributed to the software world.

His politics, which I can generally do without, nonetheless generated the software made the Linux kernel something other than a curiosity. A huge percentage of what most Linux users call "Linux" are really the GNU utilities, which Torvalds grafted onto the Linux kernel. (Disclaimer: I'm not one of those GNU evangelists who demand that Linux be called "GNU/Linux". Just sayin'...)

Where would we who program be without gcc, gdb, and the rest?

I was an emacs fan years ago, not so much now, but it is one hell of an editor way of life.

It's a shame that personally he seems to be an asshole hippie. Nonetheless, three cheers for him and what he did -- he made the world a much better place.
