Ed Koch Changes Mind, Decides That Obama Doesn’t Hate Jews

Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch recently endorsed Republican Bob Turner in the special election for Anthony Weiner's old congressional seat, helping him pull off the upset against Democrat Dave Weprin. Koch, who supported Obama in 2008, wanted to punish the Democratic party over "President Obama's open hostility to the State of Israel." But that was all a few weeks ago! He's now changed his mind and endorsed Obama, after being invited to a fancy party.

Koch released a statement today that, for the most part, is a party report with several off-topic detours along the way:

I attended the gathering of United Nations delegates at the New York Public Library held by President Barack Obama and Mrs. Obama. The New York Public Library is one of the most spectacular public buildings in New York City. Many of its ornate rooms, rivaling in their own American way, the dazzling gold-finished galleries at Versailles, the residence of Louis XIV outside of Paris, were restored with the personal fortune of Brooke Astor who lived until the age of 105.

I first met Mrs. Astor shortly after I became Mayor in 1978. A ceremony had been scheduled...

Skipping through several more paragraphs of stories about cocktail parties and zoo trips with the Astors in the '70s, he gets to the point: This Obama party was fun! Sure, he can win a second term now:

I believe the recent vote in the 9th Congressional District in New York affected in a positive way the policy of the U.S. on the Mideast.

Even assuming that Obama doesn’t hate Jews and Israel, he is destroying the United States! Stop it, Ed. Go change your depends and call WABC to see if they’ll give you your old show back again. I miss you shouting down anyone who dared question your wisdom and authority.

He does try to do the right thing at times. I can't see him selling out Israel.

Koch is nothing but dyed-in-the-wool Democrat occasionally having hissy fits deviating from the party line, but easily brought back onto the reservation by some little scraps thrown his way by his masters.

His thinking that he was the decisive factor in Turner's congressional win and that Turner's win was a cause for a purported vast change in the Obama administration's stance on Israel is just the latest example of the egotism he has exuded throughout his political career.

This new statement is hardly surprising, very consistent with his history.

Did Eddie wake up this morning with a horse's head in bed?

They wouldn't have to go that far. Koch is very susceptible to blackmail by threatened "outing," if you get the drift. He's managed to keep a (sort of) secret for decades.

The big thing with Ed is the gay issue. BTW: his ego is so huge that he had no problem with a bridge being named after him in Queens despite the protests of those of us who live near the bridge.

Koch also supported the enormous fees on the bridge and tolls in New York and has never met the tax he did not like. I never voted for him and never supported him. When he would ask, “How am I doing?” My response was, LOUSY, CURLY!

Koch’s role in Turner’s victory was marginal. Dov Hikind had a far greater impact.

Dov Hikind had a far greater impact [on Turner's victory].

Hikind should have switched to the GOP a long time ago. It would be a much better fit for him. I would think he's been approached about that, but you would have to think that he'd be scared of losing his Assembly seat if he ran on the Republican line. My guess is he could still win as a Pubbie.
