It offered to buy the home (after 2 years, because I guess there are tax penalties if you sell an Extreme House before then), assist the father in downsizing to a home where he didn’t have to unscrew lightbulbs to make ends meet, and renovated the Extreme Home into a retreat centre.
A reporter followed up with the story, but she wasn’t with Extreme Makeover. Apparently, after doing some “Where Are They Now?” stories, she discovered this pattern of HUGE HELP... but only once. And the help and home are SO HUGE that the families they are supposed to be helping cannot afford to live in them.
ABC promised that we were going to have a home and that we were going to be together. And basically what happened was, we’re not in a home. The thing is they keep airing our show almost like every other weekend and so that show, every time it gets aired, it makes money. They‘re practically making money off of us, and it’s telling a story that’s not really true. It’s telling a story that we‘re all in a house together, we‘re happy, we’re a loving family, we’re happier than we ever could be in our lives, but it’s really not true.
Looks like another person featured on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is in danger of losing her home.

Sadie Holmes thought it was a blessing when ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition built her a 7,000-square-foot home and office for her charity in 2006.
Now she’s struggling to keep her nonprofit afloat, and she may end up losing the $400,000 home if she can’t pay a $29,000 county lien—placed on the property after months of code violations racked up....
“I’m grateful for this building,” Holmes said, “but it’s causing me too much stress and too much problems.”
