When it was built in 1936, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was a Depression-era project that put scores of Americans to work. When its $6.3 billion replacement opens in two years, it will be an international affair from the bottom up, an example of massive outsourcing that has drawn both praise and criticism.
Half a dozen countries contributed expertise or materials, none more so than China.
"China was immensely helpful to getting this project built," says California Department of Transportation spokesman Bart Ney. "They were able to turn the steel around and work directly with our own inspectors to make sure we met the specifications of what this bridge required."

I agree that union labor is too expensive, but you could also argue Chinese slave labor with Chinese government subsidies is too cheap and California shouldn’t have dealt with either party. Seems to me Califonicate is a hypocrit all around on this one. Libs are supposed to support unions and hate human rights violators. Funny how this one worked out.
Well, I imagine that there will at least be several union people employed as permanent protesters at the entrance to the new bridge.
And Obama will count them as jobs created.
I hope the cheap Chinese steel holds up. They have a history of trying to pass off lower quality products as meeting higher standards. Reading about them “working with the inspectors” is another frightful thing in this light.
Unions working themselves right out of a job.
“I hope the cheap Chinese steel holds up. They have a history of trying to pass off lower quality products...”
In today’s world, to rust the Chinese or the Arab too much is to die.
In todays world, to rust the Chinese or the Arab too much is to die.
That's a Freudian slip if I've ever seen one.
I work in a power plant. We don’t allow Chinese steel on the property.
Made with high quarity Chinese steel, best in worrd. Hord up to biggest earthquake, you see.
I'm a manufacturer and have had plenty of experience with chinese sheet metal and their idea of tolerances:
This type of sh** should point out to even the stupidest “fair trade” advocate that our industrial base has fled the country. The day we can’t build our own bridges without outside help is a sad frickin’ day for America.
Maybe if we’d outsourced the “Freedom Tower” it would have been done by now. Ten years later. America really is becoming a second rate nation—if that.
That was what was running through my brain with this. Don’t the Dims OWN SF, Oakland and the rest of the bay area? Isn’t the statehouse solid “blue”?
I guess that just talking about saving jobs and putting Americans to work is all that is required if you’re a dem. No doubt most of them have illegal alien house and yard help and send their kids to private schools, too.
The hypocrisy of Libs never ceases to amaze.
Scary the bridge is made out of so-called high quality Chinese steel. I usually drive across the bay twice each year when I do my annual trip to CA in May/June.
Union rules?
Not at all-company policy.
There are no “non-critical” materials in a power plant. We need to know that our metals are what they say they are. Chinese crap is very “iffy”.
There are terminals to be built or existing ones needing expansion. Yet, many environmental groups oppose such job creating work. So, really, a Chinese bridge is just one small reason amongst a sea of domestic problems on why unemployment continues to be a problem.
