Did Darwin Believe in God?
The American Thinker ^ | 9-17-2011 | Dr. Richard Weikart

Posted on 09/18/2011 11:51:02 AM PDT by Olympiad Fisherman

Ever since Darwin was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey, well-intentioned, but ill-informed or gullible people have either tried to convert Darwin posthumously to their own religious views or else have branded him an arch-atheist. Many years after he died, a rumor arose that Darwin had converted to Christianity on his deathbed, and this became a persistent legend among evangelical Christians. The historian James Moore devoted an entire book to dismantling this myth, but the rumor still circulates despite his expose.

On the other side of the fence, prominent atheists have tried to claim Darwin for their own, too. When a prominent German materialist visited Darwin in England, he tried to get Darwin to confess that he was a fellow atheist. Darwin refused his request ...

Did Darwin Believe in God?

OMG! Just asking the question could drive half the human race catatonic.

He stated further, "I can indeed hardly see how anyone ought to wish Christianity to be true; for if so the plain language of the text seems to show that the men who do not believe, and this would include my Father, Brother and almost all my best friends, will be everlastingly punished. And this is a damnable doctrine".

Hoping is isn't true is not the same is proving it isn't true, as his soul has now learned.

Question: "Did Darwin Believe in God?"

Response: Whether Darwin believed in God or did not believe in God what earthly difference does it make? God exists or doesn't exist irrespective of Darwin's opinions or beliefs-if that is the purpose of the question?

The last line in Darwin’s “Origin, “ and similarly in Steve Jones’ “Darwin’s Ghost;” a modern update to Darwin’s famous book.

"There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful have been, and are being, evolved.

“what lessons can we draw about the relationship between religion and evolutionary theory from Darwin’s own trajectory?”

This quote from the article provides some answer:

“We should also note that Darwin’s statement about a Creator breathing life into one or a few organisms did not really reflect his private views. We know this, because later in his correspondence he expressed regret about including this statement, explaining that he had added it to deflect criticism of his theory.”

Unless I’m somehow misreading the article, the above quote tells us that Darwin admitted he was dishonest regarding one of the most—if not the most—fundamental principles of his most influential book.

In other words, where else in the book was Darwin not being straight with us?

I dunno - but if there has been, will be or is - any form of evolution, hybridization or cross pollination in plants & animals - God invented it.

See post 7 ... Darwin did not use the word “creator.”

Weikart’s description of Darwin’s later correspondence clearly demonstrates an admission by Darwin that he included the comment even though he did not agree with it.

So it doesn’t matter what particular words Darwin used. If what Weikart says is true, then Darwin was lying in the 1860 edition of “Origin.”

Oh, there's a grandeur, alright. I've come to the conclusion that most people believe in God because... well, it's so exciting! The secret codes and mystical happenings, the miracles and riddles and legacies and dynasties and angels and demons and cryptic messages and Chosen Ones! The 3 Days Time and 3 Cock Crows fairy tale Once Upon a Timeness of it all! The suspense... the intrigue, the betrayals and seductions and royal personnages and mighty battles and epic journeys! The dreams! The visions! The mystic crystal revelations! It's DaVinci Code meets America's Next Top Model! Who is going home? Who is staying? Who has the grace, who can find the trap door? It's all so thrilling!!!

It's adolescent.

Here’s a thought experiment: Find some species of something that reproduces quickly and rapidly (bacteria or something) and then wait for the population to evolve into something different, more complex. (”And now for something completely different ....”)

Isn’t that how evolution is supposed to work?

All of the evolutionists tell me it does, and that’s partly how they’ve proven evolution.

I still don’t understand why biology basics tells us that chromosome pairs cannot be changed, yet somehow magically species with fewer pairs developed from more, etc.
