I got the belt, but I don’t think I had bruises or welts. Red marks that went away in a little while, maybe. Straightened me right out too. I’m all for the belt. But a serious beating is not the same thing.
To = too what the heck. Some Biebers need spanked.
This one does sound a bit excessive and I say that as someone who got the belt a few times.
Boy, my parents would have gotten the chair. They were definitely repeat offenders.
You’re a bad man Charlie Brown!
Hard to tell from the story. Sounds like dad went overboard. But I don't agree with grandpa that 6 is too young. You just have to use it and do it judiciously.
He should be placed in jail forever. WELTS???? Come on. I have gotten the belt before and no marks. I have with my kids......no marks. This guy was out of control and abused his child. Throw away the key!!!!!
In my house, it wasn’t the belt that put the fear of God into you. It was the wait...
My old man used his size 12 tennis shoe, sting city.
Agreed, spanking is more of an attention getter.
The red marks that went away made me want to be a better kid. The bruises and scratches made me hate my parents. Its not necessary to injure your child.
Welts? Surface bruising?
Get over it... If it's uncomfortable to sit for a few days, take it as a lesson.
Leave the Nanny State out of it.
Olive loaf ought to be against the law. Pimento loaf, too.
Had to go get the switch off a bush myself
And if you got one that was to “wimpy” Ma would go and get a real one to replace it, which was not the preferred outcome.
Than, one day . . . we were burning leaves outside and PURELY BY ACCIDENT a burning leaf HAPPENED to get in the switch bush. Despite my Oh-So-Valiant efforts the poor bush went up in flames.
I thought I was in the clear, until Mom told me to get the Bolo Paddle. ;(
I don’t know if his son has medical issues, but some people bruise really easy, so I don’t know if that is an objective way of concluding that he beat him too hard.
Hopefully they give him a free trial where this is considered. I kind of doubt a father would beat their own son if they aren’t drunk or under the influence of something.
My parents would have gotten the gas chamber, I guess.
When I was 6 I dipped a kittens' tail in gas and lit it. I didn't quite realize it would actually harm the cat (yes, it survived just fine).
I got a similar whoopin' from my dad...and it was well deserved. It etched into my mind forever to never harm an animal outside killing it for meat...and that must be done mercifully.
Again, it was well deserved and I would hate to think it's now illegal.
Boys need more strident discipline than girls...especially at that 5-10yrs old range.
I had got the belt many times growing up and many times it was the wait that was by far the worse. As I got a little older and a little tougher sometimes I would start to get a little theatrical though in order to mock a punishment. My Dad once hit me so I would hit the floor and faint that I was dead or something. Where it all lead up to was one time I had acted up and my Mom had decided she was going to punish me and she decided to use some wire or something in the television repair shop my family owned. I started screaming bloody murder and she thought I was faking it and being theatrical but the wire left massive welts all down my back. She freaked after seeing what she did. I got over it though. Still love my Mom (she is the greatest!) and actually laugh at it all looking back on it.
