I got the switch at age 6, for throwing my olive loaf sandwich in the garbage and lying about it. Had to go get the switch off a bush myself. I don't think 6 is too young. But it doesn't take a violent beating to get the point across. The bare humiliation and shock of it is enough, and teaches a kid who's boss.
Hard to tell from the story. Sounds like dad went overboard. But I don't agree with grandpa that 6 is too young. You just have to use it and do it judiciously.

Olive loaf ought to be against the law. Pimento loaf, too.

I had to do that too - go and GET the punishment tool from the “Switch Bush”.
And if you got one that was to “wimpy” Ma would go and get a real one to replace it, which was not the preferred outcome.
Than, one day . . . we were burning leaves outside and PURELY BY ACCIDENT a burning leaf HAPPENED to get in the switch bush. Despite my Oh-So-Valiant efforts the poor bush went up in flames.
I thought I was in the clear, until Mom told me to get the Bolo Paddle. ;(
