You did great. I let my kids know about “controversy” in the subjects they studied at school. I would have said the science is not really settled on man made (carbon) global warming nor the solutions being proposed by some politicians. I would have provided him some links to scientific material and discussions to read.

From what we observed, teachers do not like being questioned about any subject that is politically motivated. They don't want kids bringing in any information or facts that are beyond the materials they provide to students. That always was true for social(ist) studies but now, sadly, it is true for real science, too.
