Secure boot only works in UEFI mode, thus preventing legacy booting in 16-bit mode. The Linux community has been quick to point out that generating signed bootloaders may be problematic for open source operating systems.

They couldn’t lock Linux out of the Wii, PS3 or Xbox360. What makes them think that they can do any better when they dont control the hardware.
It will also bring a whole new round of anti-trust lawsuits.

I suspect this will not be a huge issue for long. Too much Linux running out there now.
This will probably be optional within the BIOS (something you can turn off or on), and I doubt that Windows 8 will require secure boot enabled in order to boot. So you should be able to boot Windows 8 from an unsecure machine.
Also, I'm fairly certain that the BIOS writers will pubish a spec for signed boot loaders. And I'm fairly sure that there will be a signed boot loader capable of booting Linux on these machines in the secured mode.

Last week I installed Kubuntu 11.04 to a 16GB flash drive, just to fool around with for a few hours a day, learn, see what's new, etc.
After 3-4 days I stopped loading Windows and now I'm running linux 24/7.

An awesome way for Intel and Microsoft to accellerate the rate of tablet adoption and technical advancement.
I have a two year old windows netbook that should last until the tablets of today (which are equivelent to old pentium one machines running windows 95) reach the power of an XP machine of the middle of the last decade.

The install to the flash drive includes a persistence file (4G for me), which allows all changes to be maintained session to session.
I may eventually install it onto my HD alongside Vista, but for now I'm content.

Ahh I didn’t realize it was BIOS.
Does Linux have their own BIOS’s?
Can that then work on any board?
If not , then there’s an opportunity.

Secure boot only works in UEFI mode.
So that’s good.
