GIMP 2.7.3 adds Single Window Mode
Linux Journal ^ | August 30th | Michael Reed

GIMP 2.7.3 has added one of the most requested features in the program’s history: a single window mode. Version 2.7 is part of the development branch, so unfortunately, the feature won't hit most distro repositories for a while.

As I said, because 2.7 is a development branch, most distributions won’t add it to their repositories, and this means that you’ll have to build it yourself. It’s a shame, in a way, because the new window mode might be viewed as a ease of use feature that less advanced users would appreciate. According to this(link) page, it looks like version 2.8 should arrive in about November.

I don't use Gimp for illustrations. I use Gimp for image processing for remote maintenance imaging.

You take bunch of photos of the same scene with different F-stops and process them to eliminate shadows in dark areas and highlights in bright areas to increase the detail to almost equal over distance and lighting. Gimp is great for that with the perl scripting that is available.

Technical kind of geeky stuff. Not artsy kind of geeky stuff.

Now there's a branch for both of us. I love putting the windows on one screen and the image, full size, on the other.

Pretty cool, this open source stuff, no? Don't like it? Change it and distro it and make everybody happy.

I've been aware that folks didn't like the separate windows, and I'm glad there is an option for a single window version. Everybody wins.

That's hard to do with closed-source.

The multi windows option is good with dual+ monitors. But often I’m on a laptop and don’t have that luxury.

When I was looking for a job I used Gimp a lot to edit pdf files. Especially job applications.
