Angler lands his 'fish of dreams,' has heart attack, dies

Friends say Dan Dodds of Coupeville, WA, fought the big king salmon nearly 20 minutes, running up and down the beach at Keystone Spit and wading waist-deep into the water before finally landing the 28-pounder he called "the fish of my dreams."

Minutes later, Dodds, 62, suffered an apparent heart attack and fell face down in the water. Efforts by fellow anglers to perform CPR failed, and he was pronounced dead at Whidbey General Hospital. "If I have to go, I’d like to go in that manner," said angler and friend Joe Biller. Whidbey News Times.

Coupeville resident Joe Biller hoists up the 28-pound salmon caught by Dan Dodds, also of Coupeville. Dodds died shortly after catching the fish.

Gone in a blaze of glory . . . wouldn’t mind making my exit in a similar fashion.

I'd prefer going out after having found the winning Powerball ticket in my yard (I don't gamble), taken 40 years to spend through the fortune, and passing after having had my last $1000 a plate steak and lobster dinner.

I would have agreed if he got to eat it with his family with a beer around a fire then died that night in his sleep.

Perhaps his buds will grill it up for his wake.

I would hope that mine would.

Wild fish, looks to be a hen. Got some sea lice too. You might be right. According to the regs, he might have been supposed to release it.

Another couple weeks and I might get my license here. The fish are fairly easy to catch but there are so many damn rules and clauses and regulations and exceptions and special rules you are almost guaranteed that if you go out fishing you will break AT LEAST one of them!

One of the best and closest salmon rivers in the state I used to fish all the time and now all you can use is a 1/2 inch hook there, well any fish worth catchin would chomp on the hook, chew it up, and spit it out!!

I’ve caught bigger than this one, but only twice.

My Brother’s ashes are in two of his favorite fishing spots and when his pals, or my other Brother or I, go to those spots a cold beer is pour in before a line is wet. One is in the Keys and the other off Ft. Myers.
Damn Right, what you said!
God Bless all Fishermen and Fisherwomen!

“Every man has a fish in his life that haunts him.”

Negley Farson (1942)

The one that haunts me is a big brown trout in the South Holston tailwaters (Virginia/Tennessee border). He followed my offering up to the drift boat, then swam away as I spotted him.

I almost had a heart attack when I saw his size.

Awesome — that’s the way I’d like to be remembered, like your brother.

What’s the saying “God doesn’t subtract the time spent fishing from ???”
