This incessant fearmongering about any and every storm makes people callous to a future real storm. 24 hour coverage, evacuations, mobilizing the entire emergency plan... Are we overreacting a little?

After going through Katrina, I'd much rather they "cry wolf" than take the slightest chance of underestimating it. Because of the original forecasts of strength/point of impact, etc., we figured that Katrina would be similar to Georges for our area in S. Mississippi - 110 mph winds and maybe knocking don a few trees. It killed some folks and really messed up a lot more. When a storm tracks like Katrina or Irene (along the coast) the storm pushes water ahead of it, then pushes it on-shore due to the rotation. A CAT 2 will push a lot more water up than a CAT 3 that comes straight at you from the Ocean.

Yes. I had to kind of roll my eyes when I read that someone was reported as saying that “Up here, hurricanes are just a part of life.” Now I’m not saying they DON’T have hurricanes “up there”, but if you want to go to a region where they really ARE a REGULAR occurrence, check out the gulf states. We deal with them every year. Some pass us by, but MANY do not. Irene will NOT be the East Coast’s “Katrina”. Not by a long shot. It will, as you said, make many look very foolish for their reactions and dire predictions.

Hysterical as in hysterical, or hysterical as in funny? Both I imagine.

That was my problem. Thanks.

/far better to be safe than sorry.../

Actually, I don’t think it is that clear cut. It really depends on the cost of “safe” and the likelihood of being sorry. e.g. my home is not hardened against meteorites or really large hail. I still feel relatively safe.

Back to your naysaying, I see. The reason the subway is shut down is because of the fair chance of water overtopping NYC levees and the subway system getting flooded by salt water.

Based upon the over-hype coming from the mouths of the doomsdayers on TWC and the knowitalls on the other thread, there is a fair chance that the entire Borough of Manhattan could get blown off the bedrock upon which it sits, killing millions of people as the entire city is swept out to sea. And what's your excuse for shutting down the bus system and Metro North?

And this will be a lot worse than a n'oreaster, as the trees are fully leafed and will come down a lot more easily.

Apparently, you have never been in a real nor'easter, where the heavy weight of ice and snow combined with subfreezing temperatures cause trees to snap in half rather than sway with the wind.

And due to all the rain already received, there will be major stream and river flooding as well.

I live on one of those creeks in SE New York and despite all the recent rains, I was able to walk across the creek this morning without getting my feet wet.

So go ahead and continue to wallow in your stupidity - you know, the same kind of stupidty that killed so many people with Katrina.

Katrina topped out at a CAT 5 storm and made landfall as a powerful CAT 3. Irene topped out as a low level CAT 3 and will hit the Northeast as a low level CAT 1, if the doomsday crowd is lucky; but for the vast, overwhelming majority of us, there is a "fair chance" that Irene will not even produce sustained winds of tropical storm force. In addition, Katrina killed very few people. What killed the people is a politically corrupt government that spent the money that was supposed be used to maintain and improve the levies on politically motivated projects like midnight basketball leagues for gangbangers.

Here's a perfect example of the over-hype: http://abcnews.go.com/US/hurricane-irene-category-thursday/story?id=14369848

I am beginning to suspect that they were hoping that this Hurricane would allow them to use it as a backdoor stimulus to the cities (read democrats), but Mother Nature is not cooperating.

"Y'really think I'm gonna' let YOU destroy my remnant?...I'M still here for YOU if and when you want ME"

That is a strange theology you have there.

You are calling it a mistake? What a joke. The current forecast track is exactly the track to maximize surge into NYC.

Ike was only a Cat 2. And ended up being the 2nd-most destructive storm in American history. Size does matter and this storm is huge. The flooding will be horrific.

First of all, you're blowing b.s. out of your arse. No one is claiming anything close to Manhattan getting scraped clean.

Second, you were dead wrong with your prediction that Irene would track well east of NYC - now it's heading right towards it.

Third, the forecast track could maximize surge for NYC. So evacuations of the lowest-lying areas are prudent. By the time you know for sure exactly what is going to happen (and you have shown that you don't), well, it's too late to react to it if you've guessed wrong.

Regarding the flooding, we're looking at 6-10 inches of rain on top of what has fallen already. That earlier rain fell on dry ground. This rain is going to fall on saturated ground. If you want to discount the possibilities that such represents, well, you are keeping your stupid streak going.

lol, Domberg. That is good. He is a prime example of why the RNC should be able to ban lefty politicians from using the Republican title.

IMO, the reaction and planned response has been in the works for 2 1/2 years. They wanted an opportunity to show the correct response a President should have for a hurricane. However no hurricane for his first 2 years. Finally a puny Cat 1/TS shows up so they go into full fear-monger, lockdown mode to scare the sheeple. Only the thing fizzles out. there are going to be a lot of businesses who lost the opportunity to make money this weekend. but then again maybe that was part of the plan. Never let a crisis go to waste.

No. This is a hurricane. Currently it's spitting out tornados in Delaware and New Jersey.

That's kind of unusual for Jersey, but not around here or North Carolina. Thankfully the storm's stronger urges are mostly to the North but they can wobble.

People on the West side of the hurricane are getting gentle almost leisurely weather. People on the East side of the hurricane are getting high winds, enormous rain, dangerous conditions.

NEW YORK will get all of it full force no matter which way it goes because ALL OF IT is going to the Big Apple.

They have not had a hurricane hit them in 187 years.

Virginia currently has 2 million people without electricpower. New York will probably lose power at a comparable rate.

We had a blizzard 1.5 years go. It dropped 4 ft of snow on top of 2 ft of snow and we didn't get out for 2 weeks.

Did you say "hysteria"?

Has FOX dragged out Jerry Rivers and his brother yet for the full effect like hanging onto lamp posts and jumping into the drink to photograph drowning people?

If not, we know it is a dud.

It's the amount of rainfall that most threatens any modern urban area.

Thanks to "Planning" we know surface drainage, sanitary sewer and storm sewer drainage capacity ~ plus we should know where low-lying areas are where we can have serious flooding in the urban places.

I noticed New York was careful to close down only those places likely to be flooded, or which, if flooded could create great loss of life.

New Jersey has some areas they know will flood because they always flood, and will do so into the foreseeable future ~ because they don't care ~ it's part of the ambiance.

Eventually they'll get a big storm that will remove everything in those flood prone areas ~ maybe this time ~ maybe next.

Donald Trump's casino might see a sufficiently serious storm get rid of all his neighbors ~ vindicating him completely.
