With due respect, the extinction of the Wooly Mammoth had nothing to do with humans, unlike say the Dodo. Other than not being able to see either, I’m not too sure we’ve all been too inconvenienced.

Quite a few respected scientists believe that woolly mammoths were hunted to extinction by humans. Of course, other factors may have been involved. The climate is always changing. But, it seems a bit more than circumstantial that shortly after humans discovered the new world, most of the large mammals went extinct.

Men and dogs together form a predatory combination that is very hard to defeat. Large animals provide some of the most meat for the least effort.

I think of the first thousand years of human existence in the new world as a golden age. Nothing to do but to hunt, make babies and explore. Almost no disease. Of course, their descendants paid for it later when European and Asian diseases wiped out large numbers of them.

I thought I heard that as well. Driveserve is correct about the dodo, they have a stuffed dodo at the British Museum in London. But, I believe that archeologists did find evidence of weapons found near bones of wooly mammoths however the other factor I thought was the ice age.

If we had a time machine we'd all know but everything now is theoretical. Archaeology is a mess now a days. I took archaeology in under grad and you wouldn't believe how many argue with each other about nearly everything. The worst thing is this "Ancient Aliens" show on History Channel. They have these whack jobs who claim everything in the pre-modern world was done by aliens.

There was only one thing on the Ancient Alien show that did intrigue me and maybe you guys since you both sound knowledgeable about pre-modern history. They showed a map showing Antarctica as it looks underneath all of the ice. That really surprised me as we know that they couldn't do that until modern tech satellites were able to identify the landmass. Completely off topic but was wondering if either of you had heard about that.

Maps of Antarctica as it looks under the ice have been pretty easy to obtain for a number of years.

Many people discount the desire and ablility of people to produce fakes and hoaxes.

I would have to see a lot of documentation and authentication before I would believe that a document was over a hundred years old. What age did they assign to this document, and what tests were run to make sure it had not been altered?

“In my humble opinion whales are far more intelligent than deer.”

That has nothing to do with whaling. If there are a sustainable number of whales, no problem harvesting some number.

“Where I’ve lived deer hunting was more about controlling deer populations. Without hunting within a few seasons there would be a winter starvation that no one would accept as well as far more roadkill.”

You live in a liberal area... many of us hunt for SPORT - and we eat what we kill.

I didn't say hunters didn't eat what they killed but they didn't hunt of necessity in most cases. The monetary cost of the meat per pound far out weighed the best in any butcher shop so hunting was encouraged for population control in the first instance.

That it provided sport and food was very secondary.

Does anyone know specifically what they are using from the whales they harvest?

A map made prior to any Antarctic exploration? Maybe the coastlines but I’d be hard pressed to believe an accurate map of the continent before radar was invented. But who knows? Maybe ancient aliens did leave behind a map of Antarctica. They left us Kucinich!

Yeah that’s good stuff to be sure. But the damn show is sympathetic to the long hair pinkos. How a about a show following one or more of the Japanese whaling crew from home, to ship to water and back home, a la The Deadliest Catch? those guys are American heroes and I think the Japanese could use a fair turn.

The need for whaling no longer exists

Kinda rings of "to each according to their needs".

LOL That was in the Whale Wars South Park Episode. I'm surprised Captain CocoPuffs hasn't started an "Anti-Deadliest Catch Show", oh wait!!! That's because they both are run by Discovery!!! Even hippies like money!!!
