Sea Shepherd Conservation Societys Operation Ferocious Isles pilot whale defense campaign is almost over and it looks like our objective has been achieved. Not a single whale or dolphin has been killed on the beaches or in the waters of the Faeroe Islands under our watch this July and August.
Earlier in the summer, the Faeroese police ordered that no grinds (pilot whale drives and slaughter) would be allowed for as long as the Sea Shepherd ships were in Faeroese waters. Thus, our mere watchful presence prevented any killings this summer saving hundreds of whales as a result. Not a dramatic campaign by far, but enormously successful nonetheless.
It remains possible that whales may be killed after the Steve Irwin and the Brigitte Bardot leave patrol, but June, July, and August are the three most notorious months for the slaughter of the whales as they are peak migration months. Our objective was to prevent the killing of any whales during this period and that objective has been realized, therefore, Operation Ferocious Isles has been extraordinarily successful.
Additionally during the duration of the campaign, the crews of our two Sea Shepherd ships were able to meet and speak to hundreds of Faeroese youth. We were pleasantly surprised to find so many young people in opposition to the grind.
Sea Shepherd had hoped to make a public presentation but unfortunately, our request was denied by the Faeroese government, although our presence generated a great deal of publicity both in the Faeroes and in Denmark.
Significant campaign achievements include increasing international awareness of the whaling that takes place in the Faeroes, provoking controversy and discussion amongst the local people, increasing spending for the Danish Navy and police during the Sea Shepherds time in Faeroese waters, and most importantly, preventing a single grind from taking place.
BTW WTF is the Bridgette Bardot? Did I miss something did the Hippies get yet another vessel?
Anyways it's Friday Night no Whale Wars on TV but saw this on Twitter and thought you'd might want to ping the Whale Wars list. And post your cool HTML stuff :D
Piracy in the modern age
I thought the Steve Irwin got impounded in the Shetland Islands. Did they get it back?
We watch them to mock them. Can you imagine the smell of one of their ships? I'm OCD so I would worry about what diseases I may get if I went near anyone of these hippies.
I'd like to see a killer whale eat a hippie.
Now that would be epic television!!!
Yeah somehow the hippies got enough morons to give them money!!! I guarantee a lot came from Discovery so they'd have their TV Show still.
Pan can you confirm if there is going to be a Whale Wars spinoff?
I know the hippies needed to raise 1 million dollars and they raised more than that. So Captain Cocopuffs is on a twinkies high for the next few months.
South Park whale wars take off...epic mock of failing hippies.
When I was a kid in the 1950s we read in school about the whalers of the Faeroe Islands and how in open longboats and wielding handhurled harpoons they took on full grown sperm whales which are not to be trifled with when angry, just ask Captain Ahab. We thought those whalers heroic.
Looks like these richly funded sixties leftover sea hippies have realized that the Japanese are fed up with their antics and don’t care if a few of them live or die. So they migrate their cause to a more European setting where wanky socialism is more tolerant of their “humanitarianism” than are the sons of Togo and Yamamoto.
Sure would like some liberal Congressman to observe that shark migration patterns in the Atlantic are now following the sea hippie ships.
Victory to the sharks!
I still would like to see all the funding down to the penny that Sea Shepherd is getting and from whom.
They claim to be unpaid "activists" yet they can come up with a million bucks to free the Steve Irwin?
Absolutely unreal.
I love these guys. They are so inept, it’s a miracle no one has yet been KILLED. But, I do support what they do. They are actually being VERY successful as the article says. Also the Japanese were hurt big time last season and may be giving up Antarctic whaling altogether.
I know I am a lone voice here on FR supporting these hippies, but I don’t support the slaughter of whales, dolphins or seals.
I don’t have to like them to support their cause.
There are many many many anti-whaling FReepers including myself. I just love watching hippies look stupid :)
We've had insanely crazy threads. With flames like crazy.
Ping Pan_Yan to be added to the Whale Wars list because you'll find you are not alone...
I tend to agree. The need for whaling no longer exists. Period.
Some animals are more equal than others.
“But, I do support what they do”
Nothing wrong with harvesting any creature, as long as it’s sustainably done... including whales, dolphins, etc.
“The need for whaling no longer exists. Period.”
It has nothing to do with need. Deer hunting is not about need either.
Yup. I wish I had had a video camera on the car ahead of me
a few years back with a “Save The Whales” bumper sticker
that purposely ran over a harmless bull snake.
Cattle, Fowl and Sheep are not slaughtered inhumanely using explosive harpoons that cause a long tortuous death while bringing the species to the point of extinction.
Hunters strive to kill their prey without causing the animal unnecessary pain and suffering. Hunters abide by Laws that limit the number of animals taken every season.
The money spent by the Japanese Whaling Companies makes Whale meat an expensive delicacy, not a common food source. You know, just like the food the Obama's eat at their fancy Wednesday night parties.
I guess this makes me a proud Anti-whaling FReeper. If that damages my Conservative reputation, so be it. I stand with Mark Levin on this issue, and we all know what a flea infested Libtard Hippie he is.
