I understand Mitt Romney is unpopular on FR. But I was just reading a series of posts on a conservative website and in a discussion of the GOP candidate, a poster made the comment, "Romney is the only possible candidate who can deliver enough cross-over votes and actually win a national election."
The gist of the discussion was that if, specifically, Rick Perry or any other candidates perceived as "too conservative" were the nominee, the Democratic base would be "energized" and insure a Dem victory. (Note: I'm a Perry supporter.)
Can anyone comment on the validity of the above speculation? Would having a candidate who is "too conservative" energize the Dem base and, even more importantly, turn off large numbers of independent voters and, thus, give Obama a 2nd term? (What a sickening thought)?
I agree 100%, we need a wishy-washy, spineless, pretty LBGT flipper to cross over and get those wascally, independents.
I am pro-romney and have been undercover, pretending to be a Sarah Palin supporter for the past three years.
How's that for a comment on a validity question?
Sing-a-man, stop drinking this early in the day.
People who alienate their parties base to the point that they will not vote for them are not electable.
Why does anyone think he is? Polling doesn’t equal votes and by looking at the last election, his votes didn’t match his polling. Even counting in polling, he isn’t at the top.
Just type bugzapper into the Keyword search and I have to say IBTZ.

So if the left base is energzesd we lose, so the only way to win is to nominate someone who will not energize our base?
Romney and Huntsman are the two Republican candidates who will, if nominated, guarantee a Democrat win, even if one of them is elected to the Presidency.
Romney is the candidate who would lose to Obama. But, we won’t get that far. Mitt’s inch thick support is eroding. The Perry / Palin or, if you will, Palin / Perry consortium is going to put him out of business.
Sarah’s endorsement of Rick will seal the deal. Any day now.
Book it.
No.
The Presstitutes would like to make Romney the candidate.
You see, Romney’s positions are exactly in line with alot of Zeros positions.
Don’t let the press pick the candidate.
This was the logic behind such picks as Bob Dole and McCain. Romney would lose just as McCain did. In fact, maybe even more so, since he is further to the left then McCain, he also would guanrantee a 3rd party candidate would run.

No he can’t win.
This is just as much myth as everything else about myth.
For every cross-over vote he gets, he loses at least 1 vote from the base.
Never believe the hype that is built by Karl Rove, Party over Principle types, they’re trying to create a self-fulfilling prophecy by using your fear of Obama and your willingness to listen to the party hacks.
You would think that Mitt wouldn't have the free time to be posting to chat forums.
Reagan was able to win because of the lousy economy, the gas lines, stratospheric interest rates, the Carter malaise, and the Iran hostages, and the MSM didn’t appear to be that much in the tank with Carter, as they are now with Obama.
Just Say No to BO in 2012 !
Romney has to be the most dubious “frontrunner” in a long time.
Here in Indiana, NObody I know is supporting him.
I respectfully disagree. Romney is a far better extemporaneous speaker than the imposter and would easily get the best of him. In fact, I think that any of the current crop of GOP presidential wannabes would beat barkey in a debate.
No.
History repeats itself... Think back to Bush Sr. vs Ronald Reagan. The same arguments were made against Ronald Reagan. Maybe Sarah Palin could ask Romney to run as her VP. Then after a couple terms as VP he could ride Sarah’s coat tails into the presidency himself.
We the people of the United States are far more conservative than either the Republicans or Democrats would have you believe. Voter turn-out is almost always disappointing, especially to Republicans. Democrat voters are paid to turn out, and enough of them do that low turn-out elections favor Democrats.
When there is not much difference between the Demopublican and Republicrat candidates, turn-out tends to be low. In contrast, when there is a Ronald Reagan on the ballot or a Contract with America on the ballot, conservatives turn-out and vote with electoral land-slide results.
John Mauldin was recently quoted as responding to a question about Obama winning re-election with this quip, "With nine percent unemployment, even God could not win re-election." Running Romney would be one of the few things that would give Obama a fighting chance. A lot of the conservatives would simply stay home. When the choice is between two socialists, there is really no reason for conservatives to try to make a difference, and the people who are willing to vote for a socialist generally want the real deal, not the RINO.
Give the voters a choice! The better the contrast, the more likely the victory.
Romney is NOT the center or even a moderate - whatever that is. His record shows a very progressive inclination. Nominating him destroys the GOP brand, telling voters that there really is no difference between the two parties.
A Romney nomination likely creates a third party if not in 2012, pretty soon thereafter. That may be what the Dems are hoping and pushing with Romney.
I can’t think of a worst GOP candidate than Romney.
Look at all the conservative Tea Party candidates that won during 2010. Look at the conservative governors.
