Is Romney the only possible candidate who can deliver and actually win a national election? (vanity)

I understand Mitt Romney is unpopular on FR. But I was just reading a series of posts on a conservative website and in a discussion of the GOP candidate, a poster made the comment, "Romney is the only possible candidate who can deliver enough cross-over votes and actually win a national election."

The gist of the discussion was that if, specifically, Rick Perry or any other candidates perceived as "too conservative" were the nominee, the Democratic base would be "energized" and insure a Dem victory. (Note: I'm a Perry supporter.)

Can anyone comment on the validity of the above speculation? Would having a candidate who is "too conservative" energize the Dem base and, even more importantly, turn off large numbers of independent voters and, thus, give Obama a 2nd term? (What a sickening thought)?

A wet paper bag could beat Ubama.

I agree. The thing we each have to determine is what kind of president do we want leading this country.

I’m reading the book; Reckless Endangerment: How Outsized Ambition, Greed, and Corruption Led to Economic Armageddon by Gretchen Morgenson and Joshua Rosner

There are people from both parties that should be in jail. If we don’t elect Sarah Palin, all the corruption inside the beltway will go on unabated. There isn’t any other single candidate with the balls to clean out the Washington DC cesspool. This election is far more than merely defeating Obama. I wish the hell others would realize that fact.

Hate to believe that most voters have always been persuaded by subliminal factors.

But let’s compare the ‘American Idol’ winning factors:
Kennedy vs. Nixon (better shave)
Goldwater vs. Johnson (not Goldfinger - the movie 1964)
Ronald Reagan vs. Jimmah Carter (Hollywood smooth)
GW Bush vs. Bill Clinton (Better hair)
Bill Clinton vs. Bob Dole (youth)
GW Bush vs. Gore (not goofy)
GW Bush vs. Kerry (not goofy)
Obama vs. McCain (Denzel vs. McQueeg)
Obama vs. Romney (better hair)
Obama vs. Perry (Texas born & bred)
Obama vs. Palin (authentic)

CFR-Rick is just business-as-usual.

And his supporters do not tolerate dissent.

Little do they know how badly that plays for them.

Boy, am I sick of this crap. How was Dole a “moderate”? He was a war hero, a modest man and an extraordinary Reagan-like statesman. He wasn’t a mouth-breathing, chest-thumping fool, but he would have been a great president. So show me where he was a moderate.

I don’t think I’d vote for Romney even if he changed his position on climate change.

Saw this problem in NY. A left-leaning Republican can and will get more of the Democratic agenda thru than a Democrat. This...is not good.

Rick Perry is a good candidate for status quo Republicans. He can win and would do a fairly good job but nothing will change. The same problems will be talked about in the next election with the same cast of characters promising to “fix” them. All it’ll take is to pass another 10,000 page bill that will be enforced by the same corrupt regulatory agencies.

Those agencies will funnel our misappropriated tax dollars back to the same corrupt congressmen to insure that they keep getting even more tax dollars with ever less oversight.

I have one candidate. I will not, under any circumstances, vote for another.

It got us Obama because morons who didn't get their perfect conservative stayed home and pouted. And I'm sure all the pea-brained idiots who don't get their "real" conservative nominee to vote for this time will, once again, sit home with their thumb in their asses while the country falls off a cliff.

Well done. Be proud. You didn't sell out your principles.

CFR-Rick is just business-as-usual.

CFR-Rick went to one meeting to make a speech. He is not a member and attended that one meeting, which was no secret, BTW.

And his supporters do not tolerate dissent.

His supporters are not opposed to HONEST dissent, but rather the misinformation and distortions --by those who are about as good as Chris Matthews at distorting and admiting all the facts.

Here they are ...talking up Sarah, trashing Perry and we should be discussing Romney!

Little do they know how badly that plays for them.

I think Sarah would be embarrassed by some things said on FR in her support.

Now you can run tattle to JR about me!...that seems to be the SOP.

“I don’t think Rick Perry can beat Obama.”

I think anyone currently in the G.O.P. field or thinking of joining it will win.

“He seems more McCain to me.”

I disagree, but that’s America for ya.

“Sarah is our only hope.”

She would beat Obama. Calling her “our only hope” sounds weak, sad and patheticaly like “help me, Obai-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.”

“She must announce 3 September and get these impotent Republicans out of the way.”

And if she doesn’t then you go to war with the army you have, not the army you want.

I never saw Dole as “moderate” I saw him as “establishment” and extremely boring. I still voted for him though.

Americans with Disabilities Act- created by Bob Dole.

Perhaps one of the largest and most expensive federal intrusions into business (and everyday life) you will ever see.

That one should be sufficient. I can dig more more if you like, but as that is the one which is still a huge drain on the economy, it stands out.
