Peter Robinson, a former Reagan speechwriter, agrees. "It was in Ronald Reagan's bones it was part of his understanding of America that the country was fundamentally open to those who wanted to join us here."
Reagan said as much himself in a televised debate with Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale in 1984.
"I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and lived here, even though sometime back they may have entered illegally," he said.
----------------------------------------
"He was a Californian," Robinson says. "You couldn't live in California ... without encountering over and over and over again good, hard-working, decent people clearly recent arrivals from Mexico."
That the U.S. failed to regain control of the border making the 1986 law's amnesty provision an incentive for others to come to America illegally would have infuriated Reagan, Robinson says.
"But I think he would have felt taking those 3 million people and making them Americans was a success."

President Reagan was a great man, but he was not beloved by the FReeper-type Right during his governorship or presidency. Their admiration of him is a comparatively recent phenomenon.
You are right on the new purity standards being administered her today. A lot of solid people are being trashed for past issues. A lot of folks forget that Reagan also signed a pro abortion bill in 1967. Everyone makes mistakes.
NO...Today Reagan would have been called a RINO as is Rick Perry being called....he’d never have passed the perfection test. NEVER......
Reagan later admitted amnesty was a mistake, sort of reminds of Perry and gardisil. We all need to look at the whole record when weighing a candidate. Everyone can be bashed silly when only carefully chosen samples of the record are evaluated.
“NO...Today Reagan would have been called a RINO as is Rick Perry being called....hed never have passed the perfection test. NEVER......”
Ditto
Agreed. The question for me is, will the candidate for president 1)take us in the right direction 2)offer the status quo, or 3)take us backwards. If that person convinces me he will advance conservatism then I will vote for him. I am not looking for the perfect candidate.
Reagan’s Amnesty didn’t work as he intended. If it had, it would have meant limited numbers and a secure border.
Those touting it as a reason to give amnesty are intellectually dishonest and show an utter lack of moral courage.
Reagan was never pro Islam like Perry.
Perry is about as pro moslem as you are.
Comparing Reagan on amnesty in 1986, would be like comparing Reagan’s concentration on terrorism to George W. Bush’s after 9/11.
Well-said Sir!
others here refer to errors when
“when only carefully chosen samples of the record are evaluated.” of their Candidate (Perry).
yet as you correctly point out, they hypocritically do the same to Reagan.
Reagan was lied to by Democrats, who broke the deal.
but he learned. some modern politicians have had decades,
and still haven’t learned.
...and as b9 correctly points out, Reagan never supported groups that would destroy America.
Reagan would never have been endorsed by La Raza or C.A.I.R.

The Muslim community has a significant number of political conservatives,
and they do support Perry,

No thanks...I’ve read the real deal on Perry and moslems...I do my own research...not some bias slanted crap. Dr. Jack Wheeler has also done a whole lot of research and says what you people think is total crap, in other words...NOT THE TRUTH.
