The dog's owner said he has no idea why police officers thought it was necessary to gun down his Labrador mix.
Terry Boyle, of Birmingham, said four police officers shot and killed his 5-year-old dog, Buddy, Saturday night. Boyle said he rushed home to hear the horrifying news from neighbors who said they witnessed police officers shoot his dog four times.
"From what I have been told he was not aggressive at all and he tried to get away from officers when all four approached him at the same time," said Boyle.
According to police reports, officers have responded to the home on Bowers Street four times in the past two years -- including once because Buddy had gotten into a fight with a neighbor's dog, and another time because Buddy was on the loose.
This time, police said the dog was off his owner's property and on the attack when shots were fired.
However, neighbors said Buddy was a nice dog that did not cause trouble. Witnesses said that on Saturday night Buddy was on the front porch when officers arrived. When officers approached him, he ran to the side of the house, where he was shot twice, witnesses said.
"A witness saw my dog moving," Boyle said. "He lifted his head and was trying to move still. (Police) put the noose around him and dragged him a couple of feet and then shot him twice more."
Neighbors said they were shocked that Buddy was the target of officers.
"He wasn't a neighborhood pest or a dog that was out all the time, by any means," said Boyle's neighbor Barbara McIntosh. "He was always in the house or in the yard."
Boyle said he wants answers.
"It's unbelievable to me," Boyle said. "My dog has never harmed anyone his entire life."
Police said officers were responding to a complaint that Buddy, in particular, was out on the loose. Police also said Buddy was a Rottweiler mix. Boyle said Buddy was a rescued dog, and if anything he was a Labrador-shepherd mix, not Rottweiler.
This is when a video camera on your house would come in very handy. No wonder many people hate cops.
Another small town cop with an itchy trigger finger.
I guess I've just never seen a viscious lab.
I hope Boyle gets the answers he deserves.
Law enforcement is getting out of control But cops are nothing compared to the Homeland Security Gestapo at the Canadian border. Their behavior is outright embarrasing. Jack booted thugs.
Right? The biggest threat I've ever had from a Lab is maybe being licked to death.
They tend to be very sweet dogs.
What the cops are doing today to pets will happen tomorrow to the citizenry. Just watch.
We have too many cops with too little serious things to attend to, who get paid far more than there work deserves.
When not shooting down people’s pet dogs, they are acting as revenue agents for local jurisdictions, handing out speeding tickets at specially contrived speed traps.
We really should go back to a citizens militia for public order where everyone takes a turn patrolling their own neighborhood and “professional” cops are kept to a minium for certain special circumstances - like maintaining order in courts, transporting prisoners, serving warrants and running jails.
Two black labs have charged at me.
I don’t imagine the Frisbee in my hand had anything to do with that. :-)
“What the cops are doing today to pets will happen tomorrow to the citizenry. Just watch.”
That, sir, is worth repeating.
(So I hope you don’t mind if I do. :-) )
"He was comin' right at me! BOP! BOP! BOP!"
And, every dog owner, and his kids, with a suddenly empty dog bed will send them a card at Christmas. Just remember. There will NEVER be retribution...
They ENJOY it.
Soon, they'll start getting shot for it...not unlike the officer we heard about here on FR within the last week.
I bet there's no less than 1 million people in this country that would use the same force as they would to protect their own child.
I'd sure like to see the LEO on this forum weigh in and tell us what the hell is going on.
My cousin is retired Highway Patrol and in his 30years he was aware of only one dog shooting. That dog had rabies.
Perhaps someone told them the bullets in their guns were close to expiring and they couldn’t remember where the range was.
Apparently the police are doing their very best to add to that number.
Ask any shrink about someone who is prone to abuse animals and they will tell you they will have a tendency to abuse people.
Most serial killers have a past history of animal abuse.
You can put the OldPossum down as someone who has no love for the sh'theads. I don't want to see them on my properties.
And yes, I have dogs.
Something tells me there’s more to the story.
ANOTHER lab shot by cops! Labs are probably the least aggressive breeds on the planet. And why cops? Don’t they have animal control officers in Detroit?
