A 36-year-old man accused of assaulting a 66-year-old woman inside a Walmart remains in the Sarasota County jail today in lieu of $10,000 bail.
Venice Police arrested Steven Renard Grant on a charge of battery on a person 65 or older late Tuesday night.
Officers say that Grant approached the woman inside Walmart, 17000 Tamiami Trail, and claimed to work for God. When the woman told him she did not think so, Grant reportedly told her she was going to Hell, screamed profanities at her, pushed her shopping cart and started throwing potatoes from the produce section at her.
Other customers reportedly came to the woman's aid until police arrived.
I can’t believe no one posted the youtube video People of Walmart for your viewing pleasure:

Maybe so, but they have a tendency to boomerang back at you!
And what does Eric Clapner have to say?
Did I miss the satire notice?
You know, maybe I’ve become way too serious, and need a vacation...
But, all the “light hearted” comments on this thread really disappoint me. What is happening to people? Suppose this had been your Mother, or Grandmother, or Aunt...would it be as funny?
This nut is lucky. Florida is a CC State, and had it been one of my female relatives, she would have popped a cap on his butt.
Seriously people? I know times are hard, and people are stressed, but no...this isn’t funny. Suppose it had been a baby in a buggy, a well aimed hard thrown potato could have caused serious damage.
What about pointed sticks?

There's some kind of hate crime enhancement for battery on 65+?
WOW!! An innocent shopper, minding her business in WalMart gets ASSAULTED by a mental case and all the posters here think its a laugh riot?
Damn- do you people go to crime scenes to laugh?
Was 9-11 the funniest thing ever?
Where are the jokes about the violence in England?
Odd- no one at the scene thought it was funny-not the woman, or the other shoppers, or the police.
Who knew the coming breakdown of civilization is really going to be....A COMEDY!
Amen.
Lol! “Do I Have A Witnesss”?!.....

Sadly, because of the increasing levels of brutality and violence directed against older people, elder-abuse laws have become common and many would say necessary in many cities and communities around the world. They can be in the form of additional or enhanced charges above and beyond what a similar crime might be charged against the perp when the victim is younger. This is a completely different situation than the purely political 'hate crime' laws which are so legally problematic because in this case the victims are a more vulnerable population, and so elder abuse laws have come into being in order to recognize that.
It's a profoundly sad commentary on the state of society that will likely increase in severity in the foreseeable future.
'Walmart shoppers aren't like us. They're poor, unsophisticated rubes with lowbrow tastes and proletarian problems.
Strange things happen at Walmart not because of it's prodigious size and ubiquitousness; but because of the very nature of it's troglodytic customer base in which low prices attract.
Decent people of discernment (most FR commentators) would gladly pay $87.75 for a locally grown, fair trade, organic sweisburg cabbage at Whole Foods, rather than that uncouth Walmart muck at $0.50 a head; but Walmart shoppers would prefer that discount fare. The barbarians claim it fits their "budget" !!?!!
Why can't those inurbane, loud, loutish, lowbred, oafish, lumpenproles go and get a trust fund like normal people. Then the Walmart blight would disappear.'
I would have returned fire with the pineapples.
Potato is the new ice cream.
The codes go by colors, so it would be a "Code Russet."
