Pre-mature celebration. Romney’s 7th place finish means about as much as Ron Paul’s 2nd place finish.

Zero.

I’m calling BS. Mitt Romney, the establishment putz with limitless resources and the backing of powerful DC elitists came in a distant fourth while the staunchest conservative won. This is meaningful.

Format

The poll takes place among attendees of a fundraising dinner benefiting the Iowa Republican Party. Before the vote, each candidate is given a chance to make a short speech to the attendees.

Non-Republicans are allowed to vote in the Ames Straw Poll. However, all voters must be at least 16 1/2 years of age, be legal residents of the state of Iowa or a student attending an Iowa university/college, and purchase a ticket priced at $30, however most campaigns pay the fee for their supporters.

As a straw poll, the Ames Straw Poll’s results are non-binding and have no official effect on the presidential primaries.

Since its founding, the winner of the Ames Straw Poll has gone on to win the Republican presidential nomination just two out of five times.

Criticisms

Beginning with the 1999 Ames Straw Poll, all voters were required to show proof of legal residence in Iowa.

In 2007, the Ames Straw Poll was criticized for having only 14,302 voters participating compared to about 23,000 voters eight years earlier in the 1999 polls, and for failing to have three of the four leading candidates participate in the poll, Rudolph Giuliani, John McCain and Fred Thompson. Consequently the votes received by Mitt Romney and second-place finisher Mike Huckabee have failed to demonstrate the consequence of full competition among all candidates.

The poll has been criticized for heavily favoring better-funded candidates, as better-funded candidates are able to afford transportation costs to bus in more supporters and to reimburse those supporters for expenses.

This is a poll of support among the grass roots. If Romney cannot do better then this here where does he win other then the NH? He cannot win in the South. He needed a strong showing to indicate he could win in the purple states. He is DOA in the Red states.

NC barely went O in the last election. The blue zone cities were the key and were full of white guilt voters. They’ve voted to assuage their guilt once and there won’t be enough willing to do it again to give him a win.

Or it means Romney didn’t bus in supporters as is typical in this worthless event.

Ooops.. That is exactly what happened.

No candidate who has finished less then 2nd has ever won the nomination.

McCain finished in 10th place in '07.

And those who make that criticism are completely ignorant of the history of this event. Romney won this in 2008. If Romney cannot do better then 500 votes in a purple state, and he is totally DOA south of the Mason Dixon line, how does he win the Nomination? Winning NH is not enough to make him the Nominee. He needs the Midwest and the NE to offset how poorly he will do in the South. This was not just a defeat for Romney, it was an utter disaster.

A little too soon to write off the Mittster.....Hopefully someone will primary Obama so that dems don’t crossover and give us another RINO like McLame...... I don’t know about the polls but from people I have talked to here in SC Mitt doesn’t have ANY support here..... He might last to Super Tuesday due to his large amount of Campaign Cash but not much further...

It appears as though all the commie libs in the state run “media” spent all the time digging up garbage on Mormonism for nothing.

That's OK, they can use it against all the other Morman candidates.

Because the Iowa, and next day, the New Hamphsire caucuses, will thin out the herd considerably.

Gingrich should stay in for attack dog status only. He can say thongs about Obama the others can’t because he knows he won’t win.

Herman CAIN should stay in, to show America’s minorities just how successful they really can be, when they stop buying in to the Democrat Plantation.

Huntsman, McCotter (Never heard of him until today), Pawlenty, and RON PAUL should step aside.

No candidate who has finished less then 2nd has ever won the nomination.

Not true:

Ames Straw Poll results, August 2007
1) Romney
2) Huckabee
3) Brownback
4) Tancredo
5) Paul
6) T. Thompson
7) F. Thompson
8) Giuliani
9) Hunter
10) McCain (0.7%)
11) Cox

McCain ended up winning the nomination.

Sorry but that indicates your complete ignorance of this event's significance in political circles. This is a very good indication of the strength of candidate support inside the Iowa GOP. Mitt needs to do well here to make up for his complete inability to win south of the Mason Dixon line. He didn't need to win, he sure as heck needed to do better then 500 out of 16,000+ votes. That he did not indicates he is toast.

I agree. Romney needs to prove he is at least as relevant as he was before. If not more. Not just to his fans in the media, but with the big GOP donors and the local grassroots organizations.

If, after several years of running for President, Romney is getting beaten by write-in campaigns for candidacies that are six hours old, he's in big, big trouble.

Save your money Mitt

No....I'd suggest he donate hugely (mini-Soros) to our candidate, in the amounts he would have spent on his own ass's dream.
