Rick Perry is rapidly becoming known as a politician who talks a good game, but whose actions belie his words. Last year, he waved the bloody shirt of secession, which horrified the New York Times...until they dug deeper and found that Perry wasn't just talking about seceding. He was aiming to hook up with Mexico in order to fulfill his "shared with [Mexican President] Vincente Fox for open borders." Seriously, though, Perry is becoming a caricature of himself. He first waved the tenth Amendment on gay marriage and abortion, first supporting the interpretations that states should be responsible for defining marriage and related issues, and in a flip-flop worthy of Mitt Romney, came out in favor of a federal constitutional amendment to ban both.
Perry's open borders positions tell us that he is not a conservative. His political pan-gyrations on gay marriage, abortion, and the Tenth Amendment suggest he is not reliable there either, but would trim his sails at the slightest pressure.
Well, he must be good on something. How would he handle judicial appointments, for example. Bear in mind that in Texas, in contrast to states such as Alaska (where a Commission presents the Governor with three choices from which he or she MUST select a Judge), the Texas Governor has pretty much unfettered control of the appointments process to fill judicial vacancies. In a conservative state like Texas, it would be easy to remake the courts in a conservative mold. In fact, it would almost follow de facto, since the appointed justices must face election state wide. No doubt Perry will try to take credit for the relatively conservative state of the Texas judiciary as he has done with the Texas economy when the relative health of both has been more in spite of, than because of, Rick Perry.
I have not done an exhaustive study of Perry's judicial appointments, although undoubtedly conservatives in Texas would have done so. I found one particular judicial appointment, the subsequent election, and Perry's reaction to it to be most instructive about his orientation toward strong judicial conservatives.
In 2001, one of Perry's first selections to succeed the staunchly conservative Greg Abbot (who had been elected Attorney General) was Xavier Rodriguez, a self-described moderate. In trying to move the Texas Supreme Court to the left, he drew the ire of conservatives in Texas. An up and coming young conservative, Steven Wayne Smith stepped forward to challenge Rodriguez. Smith, who was superbly qualified, had argued and won the landmark 1996 case of Hopwood v. Texas which successfully challenged affirmative action at the University of Texas Law School. In effect, he was a hero to conservatives in Texas and an anathema to the Establishment. The Establishment, including Perry and John Cornyn, no doubt detested Smith for dismantling affirmative action at the UT Law School. But when Smith stepped forward to challenge a self proclaimed moderate appointment of Perry, who happened to be Hispanic, that was the last straw. Perry and his cronies in the Establishment did all they could to stop Smith but he prevailed over Rodriguez easily and was in stalled as a justice of the Texas Supreme Court.
In 2004, Perry encouraged a challenger to run against Smith. The Establishment lined up with Cornyn and Perry on one side and the Texas Eagle Forum,Kent Hance and Ward Connerly on the other. This time the Establishment prevailed and Smith was defeated. He attempted a comeback in 2006, but Perry recruited another challenger, less conservative than Smith, and he lost by less than 1%.
Perry's actions, and his vindictive crusade against an up and coming conservative legal superstar, suggest that a Perry Presidency would be more likely to yield David Souters and Harriet Miers than Antonin Scalias and Clarence Thomases. When it comes to Rick Perry, the message to the Federalist Society and constitutional conservatives is caveat emptor.
Look. I am still watching Perry. I haven’t crossed him off my maybe list. There are a couple of likeable characters already announced, but they aren’t going anywhere much past Iowa and NH. They just don’t have it. Of those I have crossed off, I made it my business to stand back and let them each have their day in the sun. They melted in front of my eyes. I will watch to see if Perry melts or solidifies. If Sarah Palin doesn’t run, I surely need to know who it is I am going to support because ewwbama is the death of this country..
Oh, MR/Ms. misinformed, the Gardasil issue had a parental optout. No one was forced to do anything.
Wrong again.
I need to learn more about Perry and no, I'd vote for a pumpkin just to vote against the Obozo.
Perry was envisioning bring more *dollars* to Texas through this venture. (which is now dead)
Perry said he didn't think certain aspects of the AZ law would be right for Texas, not the whole thing.
He signed a Voter ID bill and a proof of citizenship to receive a TX DL law this last session. An anti-sanctuary cities bill was also discussed but, didn't have the votes.
As far as Tancrado being called a racist by Perry, I only found one publication (in CO) where Tancrado himself made that accusation. Never heard a thing about it here in Texas.
I'm not as much trying to sell him as I am trying to make sure people aren't taken in by all the bullchit going around. I live just outside Austin, TX. and have heard it all from both side.
I realize this is politics and all but, we need to establish a solid front in the effort to oust that milk toast Marxist and all his commie minions.
Well, I promise you, I am paying attention.
By the stroke of a pen Governor Perry changed the status quo, that parents must appeal to the government to not have their child immunized against a sexually transmitted disease. In practice, an opt-out provision is much more difficult than it sounds, particularly when scores of service providers (not just in Texas) require compliance with government mandates.
This is not liberty, this is tyranny.
As Tom Bevan observed in Real Clear politics,
“In response, the sponsor of HB 1098, Republican state Rep. Dennis Bonnen, blasted Perry for “using cancer victims as his backdrop for an issue that he has grossly misjudged.”
“Just because you don’t want to offer up 165,000 11-year-old girls to be Merck’s study group doesn’t mean you don’t care about women’s health, doesn’t mean you don’t care about young girls,” Bonnen added.
And, in fact, two years later the National Vaccine Information Center issued a report raising serious questions over the harmful side effects of the drug. A few months after that, an editorial on Gardasil in the Journal of the American Medical Association declared that “serious questions regarding the overall effectiveness of the vaccine” needed to be answered and that more long-term studies were called for.”
It turns out that Perry’s former Chief of Staff was a lobbyist for Merck:
“The controversy over Perry’s decision deepened as it came to light that his former chief of staff was a lobbyist for Merck and that his chief of staff’s mother-in-law, Rep. Dianne White Delisi, was the state director of an advocacy group bankrolled by Merck to push legislatures across the country to put forward bills mandating the Gardasil vaccine for preteen girls.”

The more I investigate Perry, the less I like him. Gardasil, intrusions on parental rights, lobbyists, cronyism, open borders, pandering to Muslims imam. I started off thinking he was second (a distant second) to Palin. Now, I consider him to be no better, and perhaps even worse, than Romney. Any of the other also rans is better than he is. Far better. He is a nonstarter.
“The *children* of illegals PAY in-state tuition, you idiot.”
****************
I try not to type every word. Correcting your half truths and dissemblance takes time. As a mouth piece for Perry around here, you know very well what I meant, as do the other posters here. Taxpayers shouldn’t be subsidizing CHILDREN of illegals with instate tuition, when kids from Louisiana and Arkansas can’t get it. It incentivizes law breaking and exacerbates the problem of illegal immigration. Is that too hard for you to grasp. Read it slowly.
Thanks for your disingenuous half truth of a post about the gardasil opt out. I dug a little deeper and Perry’s involvement is even more shameful than what I thought. I posted the whole truth about his gardasil scandal so you aren’t able to mislead anyone.
There are a lot of Texans on this board. The first postings about a Perry run the Gardasil mandate was brought up. I did a lot of research on it and rebutted those who claimed it as a mistake or an opt out. The Texas legislature forced the opt out on Perry and then forced him to drop it altogether. He did not scrap it by choice.
OTOH, at the time, his wife being a nurse, it was my understanding that he thought it was a genuinely good thing and did not know that he was literally being duped. That said, government mandates are for crap regardless of good intentions. And this one, before all the research was done, was an example of very poor judgement and maybe a combination of misplaced loyalty and not enough attention to the details.
Therein lies my problem right out of the gate with Perry. He leaps before he looks. Same with the islam thing. That scares the bejeepers out of me. Bush *trusted* HIS friends too, and look what has happened because of it. Creeping shariah on a magnitude I never would have thought possible, especially after 9/11.
So back to the Texans on the board. Some love him, some hate him, and some think he’s okay in Texas, but don’t want him to be president.
Right now, I cannot honestly say that I could support Perry for the nomination IF Sarah does not run. That possibility never entered my mind, so I am going to be shaken to the core if she doesn’t because I just don’t see anyone I would actually trust that even comes close. and THAT is frightening.
So guess what’s up right before the big Perry announcement! Muslim support for Rick Perry...including cair. Strike three!
Can you post the link, mesta? Perry is an unmitigated disaster. He has fallen from second choice to last choice.
American Muslims I suppose? Good, better than them supporting the Marxist.
I’m watching his announcement right now, I like what he’s saying.
no link. announcement was on fox.
Someone just posted this. I had not seen this, but Shami was the palestinian that Rick Perry asked for advice about the victory mosque at Ground Zero.

Yikes. If Palin needed any convincing to get in (and I don’t think she does) this would be it. She is not going to permit another CAIR sock puppet in the WH to menace Israel.
So Perry asked a Palestinian for advice on the victory mosque at Ground Zero? Anyway, Perry’s in TX, what does he have to do with it anyway? Was he FOR it????
Wow, just reading the link about his “warm relationship” with the Muslim community.
LG, have you seen the link MestaMachine posted????
Why is anyone positive about this guy? I don’t get it!

Okay, MM - I read it. This is has to go viral.
Perry is as bad as Romney, it’s all clear. The GOP establishment wants to force another s*** sandwich down our throats.
I think the Palinites are getting desperate. 1st, their candidate is (if she does) getting in the race dangerously late. 2nd, they see Perry as treading into their turff. Their attack dogs have been unleashed today.
