Let's hear it for the 18,000 military who stood for this photo op.

Shot at Camp Dodge outside Des Moines, Iowa the Human statue of Liberty took 18,000 men to form. The scale is massive, and the perspective very interesting. You can see in the front how few men form the base of the statue, while large amounts of men were required to form the upper details of Lady Liberty. This photograph is interesting and notable for a number of reasons. First, the sheer scale boggles the mind. Second, it is interesting that such a tribute to a New York City landmark would be made so far from the Big Apple. And also, this just shows how icon the Statue of Liberty was and is.

Something like this happened under Ronald Reagan. My poor demented fevered brain seems to believe it was done soley by public donations. My but that sounds insane!

and more accessible.

Does this really need to be done or is it this more pandering to people in wheel chairs

Stairs is accessible as gay is to happy.
Elevators is to accessible as gay is to queer.

Keep up with the times.

So some military person who lost his/her legs to a IED shouldn’t be allowed to summit the Statue of Liberty because of the cost of retro-fit? Put yourself in a wheelchair for your daily life. See how you like it. I have no problems with helping the handicapped and it should be subsidised by the taxpayer at all businesses. Of that I have no doubt.

one thing that really irks me about the disabled is that access is not enough. The advocates now would demolish a architecturally monumental front entry staircase to put in ramps because adding a discreet entry to the side is demeaning to the handicap. it's not about access. it's about power. The access boards have some really nasty people on them.

Most of our infrastructure was built in a time where it was accepted that the handi-capped wouldn’t ever be in the vicinity. A lack of vision is no excuse for fixing the problem. What you say is true, you shouldn’t destroy the aesthetics, unless you have to. A side entrance should be enough. It’s called intelligience, not compromise.

I don’t understand why people are allowed inside the statue. It’s a STATUE, for crying out loud. You’re supposed to admire its beauty from the outside. Do they really need to waste all of that money? Focus on the outside and leave the inside alone. Plus you get rid of all of the hassles, like people having heart attacks and fainting and passing out and the people that can’t make it down...
