It's the fear of snakes, and the phobia is quite common. Something about the scaly, slithering, legless creatures makes us want to run away or go into attack mode with a shovel.

Texas has more varieties of snakes than any other state, according to Houston Zoo herpetology curator Stan Mays, who writes a blog about reptiles. More than 110 species and subspecies are native to Texas.

Snakes don't bother me a bit. I'm more hesitant about spiders.

Nice garter snake.

I love snakes - the kind without legs that is. Beautiful and graceful and colorfull.

Spiders are kind of creepy.

They paralyze their victims, then suck their lifebood out of the living bodies - sort of like liberal politicians.

I have pictures of myself at four or five holding snakes as long as I was tall. My reaction as a child was always, “Oh, wow, a snake. How can I catch it?”

I’ve got lots of garter snakes here. They’re practically friendly compared to the water snakes. I don’t pick up the water snakes because they’re aggressive.

Water snakes are nasty. Never got one to tame down. Most Garter snakes are pretty docile, or, they bite do so only when first caught.

Rat Snakes make the best pets of all North American snakes in m opinion, especially corn snakes.

You are correct.

Red next to yellow can kill a fellow
Red next to black is a friend of jack

Right. But only in North America. Don’t try that trick in SOuth or Central America. It doesn’t work there.
