GNOME forkI came to that fork, and took it. And have been happy with the PCLinuxOS implementation of KDE ever since.

We mention Fedora because no other major Linux distro has yet to make the switch. I downloaded a spin of Fedora last week and malware keylogged my username and password and tried to break into my email accounts.
Linux has improved, it's livecds make great rescue disks, but it's alpha quality software.

Where the heck did you download your Fedora from? RussianHackersDistros.ru?
Linux live cd's are a lot better than "alpha". Especially if you create a bootable USB for a live OS to troubleshoot server and desktop hardware.

Linux live cd's are a lot better than "alpha" If you're lucky it's beta. Very lucky.
I was able to lock up the kernel with one distribution by using the flash player.

Yer' doin' it wrong then.
The live cd's needs persistent drive space set aside if you are going to start installing stuff.
Use an 8GB flash drive and you can have a functional system with flash, Wireshark, Umit, EtherApe, and the full LibraOffice suite... and still have a couple of Gigs left over for personal storage. Ask me how I know... ;-)

In other distributions I had applications disappear (ungraceful termination). At least they didn't lock up the kernel.

Is there anything lower than alpha? You do realize, don't you, that major companies and organizations wouldn't run alpha-quality software for their production systems?
Yet Google, NYSE, FR, and a whole host of other, Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 companies use it every day for production purposes. Not to mention that well over 90% of the world's fastest, biggest, baddest computers run--Linux.
Just because you couldn't figure it out doesn't make it alpha quality.

I just booted up an Ubuntu 11.04 x86 on a Dell D600. Runs like a champ. Youtube comes up fine as does pretty much everything on albinoblacksheep.com.
The live version of Unity even works on my other workstation, Dell Optiplex 780.
Running full install of Ubuntu 11.04 w/Unity on my AMD quad-core at home. Grub has Win7-64 and VM ESXi 4.1.
I'd make sure your hardware is on the list. Could be you are running on a generic video setup if it couldn't find a config for your card.

I'd make sure your hardware is on the list. Could be you are running on a generic video setup if it couldn't find a config for your card. That's the other problem with Linux, having to buy compatible hardware. But that wasn't the problem. I have a brand name video card. Video and wireless drivers were what I found to be the big improvements. But good luck getting a Logitech pointing device to work if you want more than left click, right click, and a scroll wheel. That was a problem in all the distributions I tried. It can probably be fixed, but I don't want to deal with the hassle. I already have an OS where it works like it should.
