A cable company calling a satellite company misleading?

That is rich.

My cable company claims 'free' HD TV programming. The misleading part? You have to 'rent' an HD box from the cable company for $8.00/month. Initially, they forced upgraders to purchase at least one digital tier for a minimum total of $13.00, but they ceased the tier requirement after a few months.

Both my JVC and SONY tv’s have a quality QAM tuner, (the SONY more so), and are able to receive several HD broadcasts without a HD box.

We have the $8 HD box rental on the JVC in the family room and also DISH HD.

Sounds like Time Warner. You can’t even call their local shop in your city. It has to be a 1-800 number.
