In his new book on President Obama's first year in office, "The Promise," Jonathan Alter includes a quote from the president's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, illustrating just how opposed Emanuel was to the president's push for comprehensive health care reform.
"I begged him not to do this," Emanuel told Alter, as detailed by the Washington Post's Greg Sargent, writing off advanced excerpts put out ahead of the book's release Tuesday. (Hotsheet just got its copy of the book and is planning to dig into it this weekend.)
The president overruled Emanuel, telling him, according to the book, that he "wasn't sent here to do school uniforms."

He's not talking merely about the election. Who did send him?
If Rahm Emanuel is the voice of reason in your White House...you might be an extremist.
So, this will be buried because it goes against (.)bama’s latest ploy...the debt problem is something he tried to steer around and it was the divided Congress which led to all the problems...he was just a victim like the rest of the country.
This guy was never more than a 3 card monte dealer and continues to run his office just like one.
Is there anything Rahm can say that can be trusted ? I mean, really. With a face like that, if this guy wasn’t in politics he’d be in hollywood portraying mobsters. He should be required by law to wear a dark pinstripe suit and a Fedora at all times.
Emanuel should had told Obama not to act stupidly and he should eat his peas.
It went in one ear and out the other , you say something about golf
I doubt Emanuel ever begged Obama for anything
Promote Universal Access and Quality in Health Care That more than 40 million Americans lack health insurance is one of our societys most glaring inequities. Lack of insurance jeopardizes the health of disadvantaged Americans and also imposes high costs on everyone else when the uninsured lack preventive care and get treatment from emergency rooms. Washington provides a tax subsidy for insurance for Americans who get coverage from their employers but offers nothing to workers who dont have job-based coverage.
Markets alone cannot assure universal access to health coverage. Government should enable all low-income families to buy health insurance. Individuals must take responsibility for insuring themselves and their families whether or not they qualify for public assistance.
Finally, to help promote higher quality in health care for all Americans, we need reliable information on the quality of health care delivered by health plans and providers; a patients bill of rights that ensures access to medically necessary care; and a system in which private health plans compete on the basis of quality as well as cost.
Goals for 2010
Reduce the number of uninsured Americans by two-thirds through tax credits, purchasing pools, and other means.
Create a system of reliable report cards on the quality of care delivered by health plans and providers. Source: The Hyde Park Declaration 00-DLC5 on Aug 1, 2000
Rated 100% by APHA, indicating a pro-public health record.
Trying to rewrite history, again.
Yet Rhambo’s brother Zeke was instrumental in driving the TOTUS doctrine.
Why? he wanted it and he successfuly got it passed.
However, what I didn't know is that most of Hussein's advisors were against it.
Obama IS a dictator.
Rahm Emanuel is Peter Lorre’s evil spawn;they both have the same walleyed lifeless sinister giant squid eyes.Like Betty Davis in her grave looks like now.
This story has been floating around since they passed menglecare.
Exactly.....so they’ll have to pardon me if I am skeptical.
Is that the direction it’s blowing now in the windy city?
To be fair to Chicago, I expect more of this in the months to come, peaking shortly after the next presidential election, regardless of the evidence or truth to it.
Good question and did they wear uniforms more like a Mao shirt?
Your assuming his adviser is telling the truth.... =.=
Peter Lorre is a good one, but I think he looks like Boris Karloff when he did Frankenstein.
Just because Rahm is a liberal, doesn’t mean he isn’t shrewd. He knows, and is willing to do, what it takes to keep power. The guy would sell his own mother to win an election. I’m sure his attitude was get the economy going first, then work the healthcare issue with the political clout from the jobs thing. Unfortunately, for all of us, Obama chose to blow everything in the first year regardless of what it would do to the economy.
