From a press release issued by the Wildlife Service:

Unfortunately, the citation was processed unintentionally despite our office's request to cancel the ticket. The Service has contacted Ms. Capo to express our regret. The Service is also sending Ms. Capo a formal letter explain the clerical error and confirming that ticket should never have been issued.

Lol! Just a simple misunderstanding. I'm sure all this bad publicity and the hordes of phone calls they've been getting had NOTHING to do with this quick reversal.

“Unfortunately, the citation was processed unintentionally
ticket should never have been issued.”

Just a clerical error-BS - Some pin head filled out the paper work for the citation or there would not have been a ticket.

I would have thanked the pinhead for the information, and asked her how to proceed as well as what to do for future reference.?

Should I just turn it loose here? Should I transport it back and give it to the cat? Should I take it to a vet to have it checked out? Should we have just let the cat eat it?

We have so many dang laws, and thousands of pages of regulation implementing each law, how in the heck are we supposed to obey it? It's nuts.

We gripe and laugh and post but modern technology, at least, is allowing the cumulative effect of these all-too-frequent stories to grow.

Barney Fife was a caricature but we all know real live idiots who nevertheless entered officialdom. Their inner hall monitors cry to get out every hour of every day and we end up with wardens going after bird rescuers. Game wardens, in particular, seem very keen on telling you what you can and can’t do about hunting and fishing but they are less forthcoming about their bonehead reintroduction of species such as wolf and mountain lion that result in the death of deer, elk, moose, etc. When the numbers of alpha predators explode the ‘experts’ throw their hands up and blame nature. Nice work if you can get it.

It was a “mistake”, even though the same vindictive woman was sent out WITH A POLICE ESCORT.

Sure.
