I have mixed feelings about the amputations being done before he could express an opinion. The extra digits on his hands would be a source of both childhood ridicule and awe, and probably get in the way of normal activities. Certainly the extra toes would complicate walking and wearing shoes. Nevertheless, it would have been interesting to see how the young boy would have considered his situation had they left him as-is until he decided he wanted them taken off, himself. Perhaps he will some day wish he still had the extra fingers, since that made him so "special"... now he is just ordinary.
Except that I assume he keeps his Guinness Record... that grants pretty good bragging rights, regardless.
At least they took pictures. He won't remember much from being only one, but the pictures will be cool.

What’s the saying, Don’t be so humble, you’re nothing special”?

They were almost certainly non-functional.
The bummer is that he was born without thumbs. The challenge is that they’re trying to improvise a pair.

Deformities such as that have no functional use. Meaning, there are no muscles or tendons that allow them to be developed along with the rest of the hand. They're just unnecessary stumps.........
