"The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.' "

3/20/60 "The Saturday Night Matter" Matter #683 Bob Bailey, Bartlett Robinson (Peter H. Fillmore), James McCallion (Albert Barry), Forrest Lewis (Sergeant Keesley), Russell Thorson (Lieutenant Dick Spidel) ; Writer/ Producer/Director - Jack Johnstone ; Announcer - John Wald ; Expense Account Total = $301.01 ; Peter H. Fillmore, of Surety Mutual Insurance, Limited, Denver, calls Johnny to investigate a string of eight supermarket robberies in Colorado - and what a racket! They follow a pattern. All occur on Saturday nights, when there is a lot of cash, and as the stores were about to close. Two masked gunmen, one tall and the other short, have perpetrated the crimes. The first was in Denver, the largest city in the state, and the next seven were in order of the next largest cities. The next one to be hit will be either Wheatridge, or Grand Junction. They are virtually identical in size. In the most recent census they were only separated by 7 people in population. Fillmore is waiting the current statistics. Johnny talks to Sergeant Keesley in Wheatridge who tells him to see Lieutenant Dick Spidel in Grand Junction. On the way to Grand Junction, Johnny is run off the road and winds up hospitalized. When he awakes Lieutenant Spidel is present. Johnny confronts Fillmore's assistant, Albert Barry, as being the mastermind - he sold all the policies to the grocery stores, getting the commissions, and then taking a cut from the robberies. Barry pulls a gun on Dollar, but Sergeant Keesley who was awaiting outside the door enters and gets the drop on Albert. (Commercials for Pepsi, Winston, Stu Erwin for Grove Laboratories' Four-Way Cold Tablets for 29¢, and Fitch Dandruff Remover Shampoo, Fritos.) CBS Radio Network,(Multi-Sponsored) (23:16)

She is looking for Red Lawson, who works for her husband Al. Bartender Jesse Wells tells Matt that Red Lawson has knifed Al Morley to death in the back. $10,000 that Al was carrying is gone. Matt tracks Lawson and then shoots him when he runs. He has the money, but Matt asks him, "Was she worth it?" As he is dying Lawson denies that he killed Al. Matt accuses Jesse of killing Al. The next night Matt and Chester are walking again and run into Eva Morley again. Matt sends Chester on to the Texas trail and then makes arrangements to meet Eva at 10:00. Matt asks Kitty to tell Jesse to go to Miss Morley's at 9:45. Matt tells her he has a killer that he can't touch so he is going to try to get the killer to touch him. When Matt goes to Eva's he finds Jesse. Jesse gets jealous and admits that he killed Al for Eva. Jesse pulls a gun. As he is trying to make a getaway he gets shot dead by Chester and Matt. Hi, guys!
Our awful drought finally broke. We’ve had around 10 inches in the past week or so here on the Coast. Thank God!
They even lifted the burn ban.
Out in West Texas, where my family lives, they’ve had record heat and no rain FOREVER. They broke the record last week for number of consecutive days above 100 degrees. My 85-year-old granddad was telling me on the phone that a preacher was visiting him and said the heat and drought were terrible, and the preacher wondered when it would ever rain. My granddad told him, “It’ll rain at the end of this dry spell.”
My Papaw’s hoot!

LOL, sage words from your Papaw.
Funny, over here we've had had buckets of rain, nearly daily, for weeks on end. My monthly water bill is way down.
Last program tonight is a variety show running an hour and a half long.

FWIW, last week Ed played the Richard Diamond Episode #39 “George Victor’s Daughter” (originally broadcast 1/14/50) which he misidentified as Episode #35 “John Blackwell Case”.

Hey you two. Glad to hear about the rain. I spent and am currently watering everything- as everything green outside wants to go brown.
I think the 9:30pm slot is actually 1 1/2 hour Big Show. I love the Big Show. Actually bought the entire series. I haven't listened to them all but one in particular, that I heard on the Big Broadcast years ago, has some of the most beautiful radio I've ever heard.
If you would like that particular Big Show, mail me your email addresses and I'll send that episode to you.
