Things On Cars that Will Be Gone by 2025
Motor Trend ^ | 07/18/2011 | Karla Sanchez

We’ve seen a lot of advancements in automotive design and technology in the past 14 years, so what’s to come in the next 14 years? We’ve all heard of autonomous cars in the making, and we’ve seen the evolution of hybrids, electrics, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and advanced safety features that are capable of stopping a vehicle in its tracks.

Imajerk17 asks us to look into the future to 2025, and debate what things automotive will be phased out in the cars of the future. He thinks steering wheels will be phased out and may possibly be replaced with a joystick, and with the development of aluminum and carbon-fiber-bodied cars, will steel-bodied cars make it to see 2025? Other forum posters are scared manual transmissions will a long-lost memory. What do you think? What things automotive will likely be gone by 2025? Would you go as far to say that human drivers will no longer be needed?

Starter hand cranks will be gone within 15 years. I think the starter motor will catch on.

More seriously, I saw that spare tires are likely to be gone. Between run flat tires and puncture filler spray, the manufacturers will remove the spare tire... and then many people will have to buy aftermarket spares.

I think we need less safety equipment on cars.

I hate sharing the road with a bunch of morons who are less driver, than passenger. Bring back some professionalism to driving.

Engines that can be serviced by a home mechanic. They’re already on the decline.

Give it ten more years and I say spark plugs. Someone’s already invented practical laser ignition that’s much more efficient, just needs time to get into market and have the cost come down.

Putting down cell phones would be a start. Those I meet along the way haven’t a clue what they are doing...they “expect” other drivers to see they are on the phone. Unfortunately I do just that and check. If they’re talking you have to watch...they’re all over the road!

The way things are going (and especially if Odorko gets a 2nd term), private ownership of automobiles (excepting the privileged nomenklatura of course) will be illegal by 2025.

I see a few things that will be gone soon.

1. Mirrors. They will be obsolete and replaced by cameras.
2. AM/FM radios. All incoming music and news will be transmitted via satelite and/or downloaded by the internet.
3. Gauges. All data will be displayed via LED screens.
4. Keys.
5. Spare tires.
6. 12 volt adapters. No need for GPS add ons, radar detectors or cell phone chargers.

See the comments ar the link for more, like non regen breaking, steel frames and internal combustion engines.

That’s funny. For years I’ve advocated that all steering wheels should have a sharp pointed spike extending out eight inches towards the drivers chest, and seat and lap belts outlawed.

Bet the number of accidents would drop by 90%!

When I was a kid, cars had front windows with a little triangular vent window you could crank open manually to have the wind directed onto your body. There were also vents at the level of your feet. On a station wagon, you could open the rear window. In the days before cars were air-conditioned, or at least before air-conditioning worked very well, these worked fairly well to keep drivers and passengers more comfortable on a drive in warm weather. I wish they still had these conveniences.

I often watch people (mostly women and contractors) who are hurdling down the road just too darned busy talking on the phone to be bothered with the irritating task of driving.
