Eddie, the fat white cat, was carried by a hawk for 50 feet, before the hawk could carry no more.

That’s an industrious bird! 4lbs. picking up ~15lbs? Impressive.

You really don’t expect your cat to get carried off by a hawk in New York City. Just out of curiosity, how did the woman happen to know where all the hawks’ nests were? That’s not something a city dweller usually keeps track of.

“I went to all the hawks’ nests. I put up signs with Eddie’s photo.”

In case one of the hawks recognized Eddie.

Glad for this cat, see, dieting isn’t always the best move for your health.

LOL Joe. I really like these kinds of good news stories. I have a hard time believing a red tailed hawk (and I live in a rural area with lots of predators) could pick up a 15 pound cat and carry it even 5 feet up into the air.

Cats are never docile animals when startled or scared. They can become vicious fighters meaning all claws and teeth. I still have scars on my leg from the stupid time I picked up one of our outdoor cats intending to take him for a ride on my tractor. When I started it I quickly learned he doesn’t like to go for rides on diesel tractors.

I doubt if any cat would tolerate a red tail getting near him let alone attempting to pick him up. Predators are opportunists and they will not take a chance overstepping on prey and being injured which can be life threatening. Red tails take out small birds and small rodents, not 15 pound cats. Just an opinion.

I watched a hawk pick up and squirrel in my back yard. The squirrel wiggled and squirmed and at about 30 off the ground he got free. He was stunned for a minute but soon made his way to a tree and climbed up. Never saw that before.

I had the pleasure of knowing Cookie the cat for nine years (RIP).

According to my wife, Cookie was apparently carried off by an owl before I met her.

And Cookie took matters into his own hands by biting the bejabbers out of that owl's leg to where that owl apparently dropped him instead of making him dinner - he had blood and feathers around his mouth when she found him later.

Cookie recovered from injuries including a punctuered lung.

Ornerly little varmit - he also survived misapplication of dog flea medicine and two bouts with crystals (those three episodes cost me a pretty penny, but I'm not complaining).

So, I guess hawks don’t know about weight and balance calculations, stupid birds. Fortunately for them they can drop their extra weight quickly as fat Eddie found out.

“He checked out fine, other than some minor cuts, scrapes and bruises..”

No deep puncture wounds...just what was the hawk doing to that cat!?

Hate predator birds.
If it was left up to me, they’d all be left to go extinct.

Back in the mid Eighties, I was on leave and visiting my Brother and his family in North Carolina. We had eaten dinner and were having dessert when all hell broke loose on the front porch...it sounded like a massive cat fight in progress but only lasted a few moments.

We all headed out front, and found their cat Marbles, cowering on the front porch and bleeding from her belly. My brother and I quieted the cat while my sister in law got ready to go to the vet. The cat was calm until out of the dark and the top of a nearby tree, an owl hooted...and the cat just about went nuts with panic.

Turned out she had a neat set of puncture wounds that only broke the skin where the owl had grabbed her in its talons. She was lucky to be on or very near the front porch or she would have been a goner for sure. They later found they had a family of large Barred Owls that lived in that area. To say the least, the cat was never the same after that and I don’t think she ever went out after dark again....

It’s still hard to believe. One of my little cats (outdoor)
little ladies just scared off a coyote, or a dog that
looks a lot like a coyote.
There had been a few coyotes roaming my neighborhood
recently. One AM, I look out of my front window, and
see a coyote looking thing coming toward my front porch.
Next thing I know, one of my outdoor cats (I call her Lucky)
bolts out of the bushes going straight at the coyote thingy
the coyote takes off running away, and the cat is
chasing it up about one house worth up the street.
Like I said, it’s hard believe it, but I did see it.
