Kennedy family divided over Mass. family compound [minor barf alert]

HYANNIS PORT, Mass. (AP) — For the Kennedys, the family compound has long been a place to relax, to celebrate and to grieve. Members of America's most glamorous political dynasty played touch football on the lawn, walked the beach and sailed the sound. The cluster of white-clapboard homes on Cape Cod served as the summer White House when Jack was president.

It was there that the family retreated after his assassination. And it was there that Caroline held her wedding reception and Ted spent his final days.

Now, as the Kennedys gather for another wedding there, the family is divided over the future of the compound.

On Friday, Patrick Kennedy, a former eight-term congressman from Rhode Island and the son of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, will marry New Jersey schoolteacher Amy Petitgout in a small, private ceremony presided over by Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. At the same time, the Kennedys are split over what is to become of this Camelot-by-the sea.

Sen. Edward Kennedy's widow, Vicki Kennedy, and his three children plan to transfer the main house at the compound to the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, perhaps for use as a scholarly retreat or a museum.

Some Kennedys have raised concerns about those plans, according to a family associate who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly. They are worried about protecting the privacy of family members who will continue to live on the grounds, maintaining the overall character of the compound and ensuring access to the beachfront property, the family associate said.

Family members are discussing the concerns in hopes of resolving the issue before the property changes hands, the family associate said.

I must just be too young, but I dont see why I should care about Kennedys except to point out that as the %^*)ers demanding “the Rich” pay more taxes, these hypocrites need to cough up 50whatever% they want to raise the death tax to on this or STFU :)

Sorry, but that Camelot history caught up even Republicans and November 22, 1963 is etched forever in history. I would be among the first there to the main house, and have read Rose Kennedy’s extremely interesting biography three times over the years myself. Fuzz and all. Her childhood years in Boston put you right into her life. I understand why those Kennedys who lived through all that, the children, would be deeply disturbed to lose the compound they still use and love to strangers treading the grounds of their parents. Let the third or fourth generation from Joe & Rose market all that history away. By then that generation will probably need the money.

I would like to see the compound given to all living relatives of Mary Jo Kopechne. It is the least that could be done.

They should name it after the poor daughter that Joe turned into a zombie.

The girl was called "retarded." From what I read, she may have been a bit slow. She was by no means as ruthless as the rest of the Kennedy spawn. If anything, she was said to be "promiscuous." Apparently, that trait was only acceptable when demonstrated by Kennedy males.

I love that Caroline Kenney was denied what she thought was due her by the virtue of her name.

But Entitlement runs strong in DC politics. Just ask Mitt Romney who thinks it is his turn to run.

It’s a bit much to have letters from world leaders hanging in bathrooms.

But I find it funny that Oprah went and hid in a closet.

Ironic that Maria will end up being worth more than any of them because of being married to a man just like the Kennedys.

William Kennedy Smith, MD was accused of rape in Palm Beach. At the time, the jury for his trial struck me as being about as insightful as OJ’s.

There was a good article in the Washingtonian magazine about him just after the trial documenting his sexual adventures as a student in DC. This may also fill in some blanks:

What a great site! I went to Hammersmith Farm - huge old place on a gorgeous piece of land.

It’s going to take me a while to get through that site. :-)

Would you buy a used camelot from those people?

I would highly recommend the series, The Kennedy's. It should be available on cable or through DVD. Paints them like the family they are: Corleone wanna-be's.

What am I saying? The Corleone Crime Family was built on the model they created. It's one reason I won't drink Chevis Regal.

"Would you buy a used camelot from those people?"

Dang it! That caused me to flashback to The Last Remake of Beau Geste with Avery Schreiber as a salesman at a used camel lot.

I wouldn't buy a used camel from 'em, either. I'd be afraid to find out whom it had been used by.

That's partly why instead of old mansions, I get more of an image of Heffner's place with the lights on....all sticky...
