Kennerly is the reason I am a photographer today. He won the Pulitzer for work in Viet Nam. He had a knack for getting the best out of his subjects.

Betty was a free spirit, not in the hippie sense, but in the sense of listening to her own mind.

I always loved this shot, not for the “equality” issues, but for the irreverence of it. I would guess this is not the first table that Betty danced on in her life. I hope it wasn’t the last. Jerry was a lucky guy. Whats the worth of life if its not fun.

Chapter IV: Betty Blooms
resources

JANE ALEXANDER: But Betty Ford’s outspokenness was not something the West Wing could control.

DAVID KENNERLY: Dick Cheney then chief of staff and deputy went to the president and told the president that being outspoken Betty was getting a little out of hand, and can you tell her to cool it? And President Ford said look, if you want her to cool it, then you go tell her, and to my knowledge, they never did.

Did you notice how partisan the mourners are? All the d’s in one row, the r’s in another. W is a gentleman while Moochelle and Hitlery put on their best commie scowls for the occasion. Maria looks bitter.

Have hairdressers refused to do Hillary’s hair for the past 3 years? Does the woman not own a mirror?

Maria Shriver? Pretty nasty look on her face.

Maria is going through a difficult period in her life. And maybe she knew Mrs. Ford personally and is genuinely sad, as opposed to formally sad.

She had a very sweet smile, and probably would have looked smashing if it hadn’t been for the 1970s hair.

That lady is Lynda Bird Johnson Robb, the eldest daughter of former First Lady Lady Bird and ex-Pres. Lyndon Baines Johnson. She is married to the gentleman with grey hair behind her, former Senator [from Virginia] Chuck Robb.

It seems out of character for the gracious Laura Bush to miss Betty’s funeral to snub Roslyn

She must have had another commitment
Maybe they needed George to help Nancy Reagan

Thanks for these. SoCA radio mentioned Carter and others but not Nancy. I had assumed she may be too ill or frail to attend. I'm glad to see she was able to make the trip.

Does Michelle Obama own anything with long sleeves?

Thanx for this - had to wipe a tear away...
My mother, survivor of Nazi-occupied France, loved Ronaldus Magnus and supported his political career early on (we lived in CA).
My fondest memory with her is watching RR’s funeral in the guest bedroom all day long and crying our eyes out...

“Mrs. Reagan was the real lady in that group”.

In my humble opinion, I think Mrs. Reagan was absolutely beautiful. Reminds me of a saying that my grandmother would say... “class has no age”. I never fully understood what that meant when I was younger but I do now.

“A big proponent of American fashion, the former first lady knew that such cheerleading could stoke criticism, especially as inflation and the energy crisis gripped the nation. Ford clued in voters to the first family’s cost-cutting ways for food bills and entertaining. She didn’t hide the fact she would rather dye old shoes than buy new ones for special events, or that buying cosmetics in bulk saved money. And in 1974, she let it be known that she had signed a consumer’s pledge, vowing to buy only products and services that were at or below existing costs. (A decade earlier, the Fords showed their thriftiness by having their four children pitch in for a condo in Vail, Colo., by pooling their money.) “

I never knew that about her! Can you imagine the current first lady actually dying shoes for another event than purchasing new ones or going on one family vacation?! Yeah... I know, I can’t either. LOL!
