Fried and True: Bacon Sundae, Fried Butter on a Stick and 'Crazy Grazin' Day' at WI State Fair

The wacky food machine is up and running at the Wisconsin State Fair, with deep fried butter on a stick and a bacon sundae (vanilla ice cream with pancake syrup and bacon bits) among the notable entries on the menu.

The fried butter - a battered treat that's been showing up on fair menus across America - comes to the Wisconsin fair courtesy of the Machine Shed, which also will introduce fried mashed potatoes this year.

The butter treat is described as "big, doughy, warm, butter-filled deep-fried goodness," according to Patrice Harris, the fair's communications manager.

Cedar Crest Ice Cream serves up the vanilla ice cream sundae sprinkled with genuine bacon bits.

"There's so much new stuff for people to try. With the hit of chocolate-covered bacon a couple years ago, and bacon in general lately, anything with bacon will do quite well," said Harris.

The foods-on-a stick category gets a few new entries this year, too. "People are obsessed with the foods on the stick," she said. "And it's convenient - to walk and eat."

The fair also features gluten-free hamburgers and chicken breast sandwiches at Slim McGinn's West.

In the next week or so, the fair is expected to unveil an unusual new menu item with deep Wisconsin roots - not cheese, not bratwurst, not milk.

Other new offerings: sweet corn jalapeño nuggets, at Krautland; the "Hold Shot" (a double hot dog with cheese, bacon and peppers), at Leadfoot's Bar & Grill; sweet potato tater tots, Major Goolsby's; a beer-battered walleye fry and sandwich, Lakefront Brew Pub & Eatery.

For the dainty diners, there's "Crazy Grazin' Day" on Aug. 9. Visitors can sample smaller portions of foods - from Reuben sandwiches and strudel to corn dog nuggets on a stick and scaled-down brownies. The prices are scaled down, too - most items are around $2.

The fair also beefs up its food-on-a-stick lineup, with deep-fried oysters on a stick from Joey's Seafood, country-fried bacon with country gravy on a stick at Firehouse, a deep-fried bacon-wrapped hot dog on a stick from Apollo Gyros, the Elvis (deep-fried peanut butter cup in banana batter) at Slim McGinn's West and Slim McGinn's Irish Pub, and a variety of kebabs (chicken, shrimp, veggie, steak) at Tiki Tapas.

The 160th annual Wisconsin State Fair runs Aug. 4-14 at Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis. For tickets and other information, visit www.wistatefair.com.

Shhhhh. Don’t tell either of the Obama’s.

Of course, chances are good they could show up...separately, and hoping the other doesn’t find out.

The bacon sundae sounds good. I’d try it.

I love butter but don’t want a deep fried chunk of it.

my son sent me some chocolate covered bacon for Christmas, it was awesome. I’ve thought about trying to make some. I also found a recipe for bacon inside cinnamon rolls. It was pretty good too, altho you need to cook the bacon first to make it not so limpy (I like my bacon crispy).

Yeah, I see no reason to deep fry butter. Just slather it on things...it’s awesome enough that way... BTW it’s really kind of cool to make butter, and very tasty!
