Begging must be experiencing a downturn in the aftermath of Capitol protests.

Obviously the victim wasn't aware of the Jane Jetson maneuver....

I hope the dude that tries that can run faster than a speeding bullet. Wait that won’t happen because I wouldn’t offer a bum the dollar in the first place.

How naive (the well-meaning victim, I mean).

Even when I attended Berkeley for two years, with its streets strewn with obviously able-bodied beggars, EVEN THERE the liberals I knew didn’t give out cash.

Good to hear. I think you wouldn’t like prison very much.

what's really weird is when they give you your money back, which has actually happened to me twice in NYC.

I think they need to organize.

Thanks for thinkig of me...but with a legal concealed carry permit and the castle laws, Texans can shoot robbers anywhere they are robbed. Gotta love the Lone Star State.

Anyone who suffers pangs of pity or guilt for the poor should try working directly with them for a period of time.

I never give money to beggars because they will only spend it on cheap wine and tobacco. I prefer to donate to homeless shelters where they can get food and shelter.

Good intentions bites you in the ass every time.

Most of these beggars have extensive criminal records, which is why they are on the street begging. Why even get near them? When I see then on the street, I'm thinking of self-defense.

Grabbing money out of your hand is strong-arm robbery, a felony which can be resisted with deadly force in many jurisdictions.

I think you should consult with your attorney before invoking Texas’ Castle Doctrine in a case such as this.

“The 19-year-old male victim from Madison was walking by himself when he encountered the stranger, who asked him for money.”

Probably a lil’ too young to know about The Jetsons, lol.

The kid made two big mistakes here, IMHO.

#1 is obvious - don’t give money to beggars. I know the kid’s only 19, and probably thought he was helping. But it really isn’t in most cases. Better to support organizations that assist the folks who really are trying to get back on their feet instead.

#2 Never pull out a wad of bills in front of strangers. Don’t know how much the kid had (probably not a whole lot), but he advertised it to anyone who might be watching.

Ok, then . . . was this man at home, in his vehicle, or at his place of employment?

True story. A Japanese colleague of mine was on a business trip in New York. The last day, he arranged for one of our vendors to come to the hotel before he caught the cab to the airport.

At the end of the meeting, the vendor insisted on giving him a 750ml bottle of Scotch tied with a red gift ribbon. My colleague is maxed out with luggage, so gives the bottle to one of the ubiquitous winos on the 100 foot or so walk from the lobby to the taxi stand. The wino goes screaming and running down the street as if he'd just won the Powerball jackpot.

That might be true that in Texas and other places with a good Castle doctrine.

But spending the time, the money ect over a few dollars doesn't make sense to me.

Because even if you do shoot someone and the shooting is found justifiable one is going to spend a fair amount of money and time.

Remember very thing you send over the Internet is for ever and it can and will be used against you.

I point you to the story in Houston 2 years ago about the man who heard his neighbors house being robbed. He stated on the 911 call that he was going to stop them, he killed them in his neighbors home and is sitting at home right now watching TV.

Again with respect.

Last year a CCW permit holder was walking his dog in a park in Terrell Texas when a few punks tried to rob him. I believe he killed one thug and wounded the other. Not at home, work, and was no where near his vehicle. He was not charged.
