Fourteen states are suffering from a drought so early and severe that it's already causing comparisons with the dust bowl years of the 1930's.
According to a story in The New York Times, farmers are running wells dry, crops aren't growing and livestock can't be fed.
Its horrible so far, said Mike Newberry, a Georgia farmer who is trying grow cotton, corn and peanuts on a thousand acres. There is no description for what weve been through since we started planting corn in March.
David Miskus with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the reason for the drought is simple. "A strong La Niña shut off the southern pipeline of moisture.

This is why I will never ever leave the temperate climate of the Pacific Northwest. Temperature extremes are uncommon, and it rains when it is supposed too, and is sunny and warm the other two months.
Oh and we have had one of the coldest and wettist winters on record here. With over 60 feet of snow in the mountains, the last ski resort closes after this weekend. They usualy close in late March.
so, how do you have the worst drought and a bumper crop in corn at the same time????

Today is the first day of water use restrictions here in Norman, Oklahoma. My husband and I are currently trying to parse the seemingly self-contradictory new rules.

If those in the southwest are willing to quickly dig a canal to their states they can have at least half of the water we are currently dealing with here in the central states. The seasonal drought ended here a while back.

It was a joke! They are in a drought right now while our drought has ended and we’re experiencing flood waters and we wish someone else had our excess.
