Who, what, why: What should you do if a grizzly attacks?
BBC ^ | July 7, 2011 | Unknown

An American man has been killed by a grizzly bear while he and his wife were taking a hike in the famed Yellowstone National Park. Bear attacks are often fatal - so what can you do to protect yourself?

The couple were said to have surprised the bear while she was with her cubs. The woman - who ran before dropping to the ground - survived the attack after the bear picked her up by her backpack, but then left her alone.

While it is not an exact science, most experts say that, in the case of a bear acting in defence, the best response is to either back away slowly, or lie down on the ground and play dead.

Letting go with both barrels of the 12g loaded with slugs that all people should carry in the wild seems reasonable to me.

One really has to go out of one’s way to be in this sort
of situation. One would be better served being more attentive to traffic whilst driveing or crossing the street,
as it is thousands of times more likely to die this way than
to be a grizzly bear victim.

I always heard you should break your buddy’s leg so you can outrun him. But, I might not be up to date on the latest advice. /s

Even a 9mm round aimed at the gapping mouth so the bullet rips into the back of the brain pan/brain stem will stop a grizzly.

Always travel with someone who can’t run as fast as you can.

Playing dead with a grizzly will just get you dead in most cases.

More practical would be advice as what to do when a FReeper attacks, as they have been doing for the past day when you dare to suggest that the criminal justice system is broken, and that the jurors in the Anthony case are cretins.

The issue with that strategy is getting a good sight picture when you are screaming, crying, and soiling yourself simultaneously. I won’t even get into trigger control.
