Normal days with the KC-135A and B-52G models were loud enough but a MITO was something to hear and behold.

I agree with your assessment - this story smacks of tabloid sensationalism. There was no reason for her not to -ask-, not -demand-. The fact that the base personnel are running to the tabloids doesn’t exactly speak well for their professionalism, even if Moss was aggressive or out-of-line.

When I was a kid, my church was about a mile from the end of the runway at a SAC base. Nothing like having a reading from Revelation interrupted by by a flight of B-52s carrying a few dozen megatons of armageddon.

Better yet, a KC-135. My first assignment in the AF was at Fairchild AFB, WA. The Buffers' noise was one thing, but the KCs could take it to a new level. And the innate ability to just tune them out over time is amazing.

I did a search for this story and found another interesting tidbit. She had naked escorts at the wedding and they had fake tattoos of the couple on their chest and back. Yuck! Oh, another story said she closed 2 nearby towns so unwanteds could not get there. The townspeople had special permits to come and go as they pleased.

Being stationed and living on SAC bases for all those years was great. I never minded the noise. I LOVE all kinds of aircraft and I knew we had a mission to fulfill.

I loved watching the MITO launches. The black smoke rolling across the runway and the aircraft lifting themselves out of the cloud was awesome.

My wife worked admin in the Bomb Wing Commander's office and the Exec Officer put her in the jump seat of his KC-135 for a MITO. She said it was strange rolling down the runway not being able to see anything due to the smoke.
