Blame it on the Puritan work ethic.
Despite unprecedented prosperity, Americans work longer and take fewer vacations than almost any developed country. Indeed, we're the only country that doesn't mandate paid vacations for full-time employees.
Only Canadians and Chinese work more days.

I call BS. Ever worked in Canada?
Of course if he really thought big, he could push for building a nationwide chain of ObamaWorld amusement parks. Free to unvacationed poor, women, children, and LGBT of course.
Why blame the Puritans ? They’ve been defunct 100 years ! Let’s put the blame on where it belongs: the government- if they didn’t take so damn much of our money, we’d have more profit and therefore could afford to take more time off.
This article was written by a slave. It reeks of prisoner thinking. “The poor little workers slaving for their mean boss.”
Ever heard of ENTREPRENEURSHIP?
ENTREPRENEURSHIP? Are you kidding? Those guys never get to take a vacation.
There are a lot of people who have leave hours saved up and won’t take them. They are afraid they won’t get their work done, or that something important will happen when they are gone. When I worked in federal government, we had a number of people like that. Also, my husband, in private industry, has “use or lose” problems every year because although the leave that is theoretically available, the goals and deadlines of the project don’t take that into account.
Another thing: I think there are some Americans who really like their jobs and/or the people they work with, or the feeling of being productive and good at what they do. They don’t feel like taking a big break from work.
It’s also true, though, that with vacation time, if you can’t afford to go anywhere, you may be stuck at home with yardwork and deferred home maintenance. It might be actually more pleasant to keep ignoring the house and stay at work, if you can’t actually get away.
Ha! This is akin to the news report we see from time to time: Despite falling crime rates, American jails are fuller than ever.
Now they want to increase taxes so we can work more and harder while they spend more than ever. It will not end.
agree.
“the only country that doesn’t mandate paid vacations for full-time employees. “
The ONLY socialistic thing obama hasn’t touched. Oh wait, he hasn’t thought of it yet!
WOW another way to run small business into the ground!!!
I am in this boat. Quarterly, I look at my deadlines, deadlines I have asked others to meet, and my critical meeting schedule. 3 times out of 4 I am looking at one 5 day weekend unless I make arrangements to change something.
I don’t mind staying at home, catching up on things though. My home is pleasant and I always have a list of things I can do.
Exactly right. America has a history of indentured servitude and that's what it is.
Shouldn’t it say “because Americans work longer and take fewer vacations than almost any developed country, they enjoy unprecedented prosperity”?
Nancy Pelosi's wealth increased 62% last year. I don't think it all gets incinerated.
According to Forbes, four of the five richest counties in the country are in the Washington DC area. That’s more money that avoided the fire.
“ENTREPRENEURSHIP? Are you kidding? Those guys never get to take a vacation.”
Whooops! I forgot to explain. I am an entrepreneur. And like you said, I don’t know what a vacation is.
I was referring to the slave mentality that lives only for time away from the dreaded master/boss. And it is the slave mentality that liberals go after for votes.
Begging the master for more time away isn’t the answer. Finding one’s place in life and going hard after it is. That means countless hours of hard work, but working at what a person is designed to do.
The slave mentality has made work into a bad thing. It isn’t.
