A friend of mine will be traveling to Alaska by car this week. They will be camping on the way. The question is can he legaly carry a firearm into canada with him on his way there.Any help will be greatly appreciated
If he desperately needs to take guns for some other purpose, drive to Bellingham WA and take the Alaska Ferry. It is supposed to be a beautiful trip this time of year.
I agree with the others. You can legally ship a firearm from one state to another to yourself without going through an FFL. Got a friend where you are going? Just ship it to yourself in care of him/her. If you are going on a hunt, ship it to your guide.
Great advice, but truthfully the first is the best. FFL to FFL is safe, reasonably secure, and no chance for border insanity that can foul you up for days. It would almost be worth it to rent a gun when you got there instead of bringing one with you.
One provision though. You need to ship your guns days before departure if you want to make sure they are there when you arrive. This means unless you know someone in Alaska that will give you a loner, the last days of your visit will be without.
The Canadian Customs folks will freak out on them. Please just trust me on this and find a way to avoid Canada in the equation. The Canadian Customs folks are at this very moment concerned about people taking guns through Canada to AK.
Tom Gresham was just talking about this on his show yesterday. He said you can ship handguns overnight to yourself at a FedEx depot near your destination. Don’t know if you can make that whole drive in a day.
Lots of other good info in this thread, though. If it was me I’d ship them to a friend or gun shop I had made prior arrangements with.
Thanks WTC, believe it or not this was a last minute road trip for him. I just wanted to get him some info so he could act accordingly. I don’t think he will be traveling armed.
Don’t even think about it.
Photocopy of receipt, dated picture of you with skis in
USA. Skis don’t have many internal parts, do they?
This must have been really annoying.
As I recall, he kept asking for a receipt. My argument in return was something akin to *look at the condition of the skis...they were all nicked and scratched up...how could that have happened, except over a long period of time/ski seasons and use.* plus, that model was no longer manufactured any longer. Meh. Welcome home. Have a nice day.
I was just going to ask that. It seems that you shouldn’t need to go through an FFL if it isn’t a sale. You ought to be able to send it to a friend to hold for you till you get there.
Now that I think about it... I already did this years ago. I shipped a handgun home, to myself, from Alaska.
No, you don’t need an FFL. You just have to have somewhere to ship it to.
