During the Clinton era, this site was a major thorn in the Clinton's butt. We were taking out full page ads during the early days of impeachment. We did stuff to combat what we were seeing. In hindsight the Clinton's weren't that bad, in comparison.
Should we be doing more?
I worked in downtown Wash DC during those years ( clinton, bush, 9/11, anthrax scare, DC sniper etc ) I used FreeRepublic as a live news feed in case I had to get out of Dodge. I watched the plane that hit the pentagon fly over my head as I walked to work on 9/11. I knew something was wrong because DC is a no fly zone. Planes don’t fly along the mall! I watched the smoke rise from the pentagon and from not very far away kept up with events on Free Republic. Traffic was so bad in DC that I just stayed at my desk and read Free Rep till the traffic cleared. The news on Freep was more accurate back then than anywhere else ( except maybe drudge ) (LOL)
Doesn’t say much for the “fourth estate” does it!
You're kidding, right?

You actually think today's site looks THIS? Crazy wrong ...the forum page was labeled the WhiteWater Page, which link is now broken.
Some similarity ..
The site format is just fine .. simple .. clear.
This is how I set up my front page.
Honest to God? Holymoly ... ROFL! Two months??? Did you win anything ‘good?’ How do you like it, missy? Hey, you won’t be far from Vegas ... slap on a showgirl getup and get on stage ... LOL .. OR will you be wearing a glamorous turban?
The only complaint I have most of the time is the personal attacks when people disagree. I think that has gotten worse. I don’t see the advantage to calling someone an idiot or some other negative remark. And then continue to go through the routine of, “You said so and so.” “Did not” “Did so” “Did not” “Did so”. Why do people do that? it never solves anything and it’s a waste of time and space. If you disagree, then disagree and shut up. There is no law that says you have to respond to a negative remark.
Okay, Off the soapbox.
That is what gets me about the “insiders” most of them are friends, married to each other and what have you. Very few of them have any idea what the average person feels about any topic and don’t care unless their switchboard lights up or their advertisers get many complaints. I think it is all a game to most of them. They do not know or care about the rest of us. The politicians and the media insiders are all in the same “in” crowd and we are left out of the equation.
You been here all that time and you haven’t made any friends? What’s the matter with you? Lord, I have so many friends I can’t keep up with all of them. Okay, from now on you have a friend here, and you best say “howdy” every once in awhile. Oh, and create a profile page so we can get to know you.
Sniff ... Dear LadyX .. Texas Cowboy .. gems, just gems we dearly miss. Hope they’re praying for us now.
You betcha he did. Great stories and we believed every word.
And to all others who remarked they like the formatting, or whatever, here - it’s so simple and clean. Sorry, I hardly know any computer terms - - -
Also read FR for some years before signing on in Jan. 2011. Was given FR’s name by a Republican in 2004. That’s when I started reading.
My favorite site, also.
Probably because I’m modest WEBTV/MSNTV (stop sighing - - -!) and can’t be bothered trying to get websites as they increased their Flash every 6 months it seemed (whatever the heck I’m talking about) and I often get thrown off - the TV crackles and sputters, then goes dark . . .
I was told about using ‘skweezer’ to access websites to get the info in a ‘cleaner’ version, which is okay, but I come here instead.
Know next to nothing about computers.
Probably will never learn how to post here, but enjoy commenting.
I actually like the simplicity of WEBTV/MSNTV. I’d be on a computer all day, because I love to be entertained!
I’ve read evidence every now and again of other WEBTV’ers here - - -
(Off the subject a tad, but anyone know what’s become of the woman in the UK who posted Pres. Bush’s week in photos? I LOVED that feature - - - I remember her father sort of going in and out of illness). Thanks for any info.
You can’t leave for a week. Sorry. But we would like to see pictures of the feathers. Congratulations (I guess).
When I first joined I regularly looked at the older threads as reference material. The difference between 2000 and 1998 was amazing.
I'd have to type half the night to tell about the great improvements over the last 10 years. Anyone who can't readily see the improvements must have the attention span of a goldfish.
OMG, that must have been awful to be that close to such horror. I guess we all run to FR when anything happens.
I’m an ancient old timer....been around. I know just what you speak of...no more needs to be said. Stay safe L.
Yes, He vaulted over the German lines and beat Hitler all by himself. Made for some entertaining reading.
Someone should work on a Free Republic best of section. Take all the old amazing threads and put them in one place.
YES...plus there are other less POLITICAL aspects.....the Gardening thread, the High Tech? thread, etc....
I come to FR for politics AND to learn....Facebook is okay, but I don't like the way it's set up...FR is the best!
My actual sister passed away last summer and it did not hurt nearly as much as Maggie’s passing. I still hurt when I come across something she wrote to me, or the picture she made and gave to me when we met in S.C., or the music box with the “sisters” on it, or the afghan that she had Bernie crochet for me as she stood over him to make sure he made no mistakes. I still plan on writing a book using her letters to me and title it “Letters from Maggie”. She was the wisest person I’ve ever known.
