The sports page shows Ted Williams hitting .416 on June 11th. In 1941, he will end up hitting .406 by the end of the 152 game season. Williams still is the last man to hit over .400 in the major leagues.

Is this the only year he will accomplish that amazing feat? I believe he will miss some time due to military service.

I am always amazed at the old news articles. The vocabulary used and the writing style used in the past suggests that well educated, literate, eloquent people used to write and edit these articles.

And yet, back in those days, many people didn’t even graduate high school, and far fewer young people went to college compared to today. You figure that the readers of these old newspapers mostly did NOT have a higher education, yet were reading and understanding news articles written at a higher standard than we see today.

Did most people have a better understanding of grammar and the use of language back then? Did schools do a better job of teaching such fundamentals back then, so that even high school dropouts in that era were literate?

I still think Tony Gwynn would have hit .400 in 1994 if the strike hadn’t ended the season early. I believe he ended up at .394.
