HAWTHORNE, Fla. -- A 74-year-old man attacked by pit bulls Friday morning had his right arm amputated, his left arm partially amputated and suffered severe facial injuries, Putnam County deputies said. Deputies were called to the 200 block of Old Hawthorne Road in Hawthorne about 11 a.m. and found Roy McSweeney severely injured. McSweeney was taken to Shands Hospital in Gainesville and was in surgery Friday afternoon. His condition was not available. Investigators said the two dogs responsible for the attack belonged to McSweeney's neighbor.
They said the owner of the dogs gave both of them to authorities, and the pit bulls were euthanized and taken to the Putnam County Health Department to be tested for rabies.
Deputies said no further details could be released. .
No, probably just some timid nobody who’s afraid of ‘scary dogs’ and lacking sorely in the ‘ego’ department.
Maybe we “threaten” them with our collective knowledge, experience and self-confidence so they project their own irrational phobias upon others.
There’s a funny old saying;
What you do not understand, you fear.
What you fear, you hate.
What you hate, you seek to destroy.
You seeing any of that here?
Thank God none of them were around in 1776 or the Constitution would have mentioned bubble wrap every other sentence.
OMG you’re *good*...;D
Basset hound, this could go on for a while.
Very cute baby and pup pic!
“That sounds awful, except that there are probably tens of thousands of pit bulls in the United States”
Try millions, instead.
As of 2008;
“There is 4.5 million registered pit bulls and at least that many that are not”
If owners won’t or can’t keep their dog under control, that’s a whole different ball game.”
And therein lies the simple crux of the whole issue.
Ignorant, irresponsible owners.
*Never* have I let *any* of my Dobermanns wander at large.
Not so much that I feared for the safety of others because my dogs are and were always well trained but for the simple reason that I wanted *them* to come to no harm.
I would no more let a dog wander the world unattended than I would a child.
No one has EVER been harmed by an “aggressive dog” who was under command to sit or walk politely by its owners side.

Sal,
ransomnote, wtc911 and Bobalu have gotten a room.
Fear is their friend and they want us to be like them.
Fat chance!
In that case, shepherd your thoughts well, have some chow, and setter in for a long discussion.
I have tasted much fear as a molested child and beaten wife.
I will NEVER partake of even the tiniest sip of that fear, again.
I would rather die fighting because *that fear* was worse even than death.
[and I don’t “need” a dog to take care of myself or “feed my ego”...not at this age, having been made stronger by surviving all that previous crap. Onward, into the fray!]
Is there an abuse button for painful puns?
LOL
LOL! Join the pun or butt out, Sal.
This is an ongoing battle between me and Civ!!!!
I think he’s one or two up on me, and I have to go for Best in Show. Woof.
Ah...carry on then, soldier!
None of that is the dog's fault.
A former city councilman in this community said the most aggressive dog he ever encountered was a chihuahua that kept attacking his leg while doing door-to-door campaigning. The owner didn't get penalized for having a vicious dog running around the home attacking those passing by, but that's only because the dog's tiny size didn't make it a serious threat (or at least didn't cause people to take the threat as seriously as they should have done).
If the same owner had owned a pit bull, there would have been complaints all over the place.
So what's the problem? The breed or the owner?
Breed bans make no sense. Penalizing owners whose dogs do bad things makes a great deal of sense.
He may have left the field of battle to sleep on his next riposte. I hope he’s comfortable; those ripostes can be sharp.
I’m getting a bit sleepy too.
I’m NOT advocating govt. regulation of private property. I pay approximately 7000.00 a year in flood insurance, 4000.00 a year in windstorm insurance and around 3000.00 for homeowners insurance on my main home. I also have insurances I pay on our home outside the U.S. I also have insurances for the business, and those totals are HUGE. Auto, work comp., liability, property, health, windstorm, flood..... I have NO intention of getting a more expensive policy on my rental house so they can have 2 ugly a$$ dogs, that I can’t stand, in MY house when their lease specifically says ONE dog under 45 pounds that is not on the exclusion list.
I WAS glad when Miami banned Pit Bulls entirely. Well done. I have problems with DC regulating things within the states. I do not have the same feelings when states of cities do it. If you don’t like it, you can always move. To escape rules set in the pigsty we call DC you have to leave the country.
There are plenty of dogs under 45 pounds. They chose to get those 2 nasty things and bring them into my house. They can KMA and I couldn’t care less if they end up on the streets or living in the mangroves with their kids and dogs. If you can’t find a place to live and you have 3 kids, GET RID OF THE EFFING dogs! I guess those 2 hideous beasts are more important to them than their kids and roof over their head, so pi$$ on them.
I noticed one of them had been chewing on the corner of the new cabinets in the kitchen that we paid over 10 grand for 3 years ago. I think he is going to get fired from his job too. It just gets better and better. :) Then he will have no job, no money and no roof over his head but he will have his 2 ugly dogs and that’s what matters.
Oh, that may be the bst post I’ve ever seen in a pit thread. Nicely done!
Sure Dobermans have killed. Mine never bit anyone but I never quite trusted that she would not. I made sure it didn’t happen. If she acted weird or people were afraid of her, I put her outside in the gated yard on in another room with the door closed. Dogs sense fear.
We have a small, fairly rare breed, around 12-15 pounds. They are shown, finish their AKC championship. The ones not shown are spayed. I choose not to mention the breed. I don’t want snooper to go searching for them via oogle, not too hard to find pics of my dogs on there.
And those pets are very compatible with the apartment blocks next to high-speed train tracks that the libs envision for us all.
By the way, I don’t think Dobermans and Pit Bulls should even be mentioned in the same breath. Dobies are beautiful animals. Pit Bulls look like a mix breed gone horribly wrong. They are so ugly they disgust me.
Do you have any scientific evidence to back up your claims?
Are you aware that people were saying the exact same things about German Shepherds and Dobermans a few decades ago?
I could spend an hour giving you links to Pit Bulls from YT videos and you know it. They aren’t worth my time.
