Conservation Experts: This Size Cat Hasn't Been Seen Here In 100 Years. There has been a wild animal alert issued in the northern suburbs. A mountain lion, yes, a mountain lion, is on the loose.

...

We’re not looking for your Aunt Mildred’s kitty here, either. This is a big cat, a 160-pound predator that hunts and eats things.

...

Ironically the Eastern mountain lion was officially declared extinct only a few months ago — in March.

That’s one big shoulder cat.
Looks very smug about it too.

Naaah, I’d be dealing in a much smaller breed of cat.

I can not make the link work.

The Union Leader columnist from Colebrook,NH(way up near the Canadian border)has been writing about Mountain Lion sitings for years. His column this weekenk was all about this CT lion. There have been reports of two lions roaming together in CT and western Mass. However, the fish and game depts. of NH , VT, MA , ME and CT continue to say that they are extinct in New England.

This link should work: http://www.ctnow.com/news/hc-fairfield-mountain-lion-0618-20110617,0,5787809.story

Sorry.

You must mean John Harrigan! I love his columns... used to read them regularly.

http://www.unionleader.com/article/20110619/OPINION02/706199977

>>William Betty of the Eastern Puma Research Network, who collects cougar reports and evidence and speaks at events, scoffs at this theory. He said there is no doubt that mountain lions are roaming the woods in states all along the Eastern seaboard.

The Times' story quoted several people who had reported extremely good sightings in previous weeks, and now say they feel vindicated. State wildlife officials, meanwhile noted that the nearest confirmed cougar populations are in Missouri and Florida, and said they think there are thousands of cougars in the East being kept as pets.

Area residents, however, were saying what many people with similar experiences in other states — New Hampshire included — have been saying: state and federal wildlife officials are in denial.<<

Here locally, Lieberal Colin McEnroe [whom I despise] had a pretty funny column that included the same notion that Harrigan makes, that the DEP here is in denial.

When the editorials started drifting away from the arch-conservative bent of William & Nackey Loeb ...I frankly lost interest. I shouldn’t have. Thanks for rekindling one of the reasons I loved the UL. :)

We’ve had bear sightings as of last week in our neighborhood. It’s a concern.

I'm so confused. When I am out in the woods, I don't know whether to look up or down!
