USS Prairie State (IX 15) - Pre-Dreadnought battleship USS Illinois (BB 7), demilitarized pursuant to the Washington Naval Treaty in the 1920s (and loaned to the State of New York). Renamed Prairie State in January, 1941 to free up the name Illinois for BB 65 (ordered in 1940, 5th ship of the Iowa class)
BB 65 was laid down in 1945 and was only partially built when broken up on the ways in 1958). Construction trailed that of BB 66 which got further along before construction stopped. BB 65 was the last battleship begun in the US. (All of the Montana class (BBs 67-71) was canceled in 1943)
